Premium 3D Printer Filament PLA 1.75MM 1kg/spool, Black

Get outstanding 3D printing results when you use 1.75mm PLA 3D Printer Filament from Monoprice!

PLA is a good choice for a printing material if you are looking for high accuracy and high resolution. It extrudes at lower temperatures, does not require a heated base, and has a very low shrinkage rate (0.3%). PLA is harder than ABS, but is therefore also a bit more brittle. Additionally, PLA is a plant-based plastic, which means that it is biodegradable and gives off a slightly sweet odor, like roasting corn.

This 1 Kg spool features a thickness of 1.75mm ±0.10mm, with a roundness variation of only 0.03mm. It has a nominal processing temperature of 210° C (410°F). Thickness and roundness factors are laser measured at the factory to ensure accuracy over the entire length of the filament.

The negatives of using PLA is that it is vulnerable to degradation from moisture, sunlight, and heat. Additionally, it is more prone to overheating during processing, which can cause dripping and drooping if it gets too hot.

good filament, but bad spool and no usage info
The filament prints out very well, and I like that the box has a cutout on the side to show the color. The spool doesn't fit on my maker select spool reel, why would this happen? Seems like a huge oversight. The box and sticker don't have any information for printing, so i just used the stock settings on the printer, though it would be nice to have it somewhere. Even with the packaging issues i would still recommend it

PROS: good filament, colors look great, no clogging.

CONS: spool doesn't fit the monoprice maker select spool holder. no usage information on package

I got three spools of this for my Makerbot Replicator 2. MakerBot's name brand filament is $48 a Kg for 1.75mm PLA, so it was a happy day to find it on Monoprice. Each spoos arrived vacuum sealed in a super thick back with a desicant pack tossed into the spool. A sturdy cardboard box encloses everything. The free end is looped into two slots on the edge of the spool walls, so you have to break a finger nail to free it or just cut it. The filament is very springy, so it started unwinding about 10 turns as soon as it was free and got all tangled up.The spool center hole diameter is 39mm, so it doesn't fit the Replicator 2's OEM spindle which is 52mm. I used what was left of the Makerbot filament to print a 39mm spindle I downloaded from After that was done, I was ready to test. The Monoprice filament is not as stiff as Makerbot, so it was a little more difficult to feed it through the filament guide tube. I decided to check out the specs. The Monoprice filament is 1.6mm in diameter, while Makerbot's is 1.7mm. That didn't concern me because the total weight of the material is the same. I was concerned about the grip wheel properly grabbing the filament. It had no problem grapping the filament and feeding into the extruder, but would the thinner diameter starve the extruder while printing? I printed an object that I had printed many times before with Makerbot filament. I can't tell the difference in terms of finish and texture. The Monoprice object has a couple of messed up slices. I think that's because of the 3D printed spindle I had to make not supporting the spool well enough, and so it's binding. In conclusion, Monoprice filament looks and feels cheep, but it prints just as well as name brand. I don't know yet if it's more durable. If you're using a Replicator 2 and want to hang the spool on the back, get or make a good 39mm spindle before you start to print.

PROS: Half the price of MakerBot 1.75mm PLA Filament, good boxed packaging, sturdy fully enclosed spool, same results in final printed object as name-brand filament.

CONS: Filament unsprings from the reel easily if you don't keep a grip on the free end, feels thin and flimsy, filament is wavy and looks like it was rolled onto the reel by an epileptic (no offense to anyone with that horrible condition). Matt black texture, not shiney smooth. Not really a con if the printed product is shiny. Could be a pro if comes out matt and that's what you want.

    Excellent product
I purchased my Maker Select through Amazon due to having gift cards from them, and I purchased two rolls of filament directly from Monoprice. The quality of the product is excellent and the shipping time (due to me living in the same region as Monoprice is located) was excellent. I cannot ask for a better buying experience and though I don't anticipate running out of filament anytime soon, I will definitely be purchasing these or other colors in the future.

PROS: Excellent quality and shipping speed.

    CONS: None.

    So far so good
I've used about 1/4 of this roll and it has worked perfectly in the Monoprice i3 printer - with the spool mounted above the print head. I haven't noticed any problems, there have been no jams, and no obvious contaminants.

    PROS: working great

    CONS: none

    Works like a charm
Monoprice's Premium 3D Printer Filament PLA 1.75MM 1kg/spool, Black, is a fantastic product. This PLA delivers great prints, and has lasted for weeks, still with no end in sight. I have just been using the one that came with Monoprice's 3D Printer, which I bought in December 2014, and I have been honestly impressed with the quality of the prints it is giving me. I especially like that PLA is environmentally friendly, being compostable/biodegradable. I will absolutely continue getting PLA from Monoprice. Granted, I am new to 3D printing, but this stuff is consistently perfect for the art and things I have been printing. I actually just received some Flexible PLA (PID12303) today, and I can't wait to try it out and review it. Definitely want to get my hands on more PLA, in grey and glow-in-the-dark, and especially the dissolvable HIPS (12301) for easy-to-remove support. Thanks Monoprice!

    PROS: Prints great

Consistent as far as I can tell

    CONS: None

Outstanding 3D printing results with Black PLA
I am on my third roll of black PLA I picked up from Monoprice. It seams to print well and the thickness is very close to 1.75mm on all 3 rolls.
I have tried other vendors and paid more, but I keep coming back to Monoprice for the price, quality and fast delivery.

PROS: Price, Quality and Fast Shipping

    CONS: None

    Poorly Spooled
I've printed a few items with this filament so far, using about 1/4 of the spool and most of the prints have come out well. The issue I have been experiencing is that the filament will sometimes snag on the spool underneath other layers of the roll. Sometimes this snag is just for a moment and pops off on it's own, but I have had 10-15 occurrences that required intervention to correct. Unattended printing isn't an option with this filament since a couple 6-8 hour prints were ruined 3/4 of the way through when my printer pulled the spool stand over, due to a snag in the filament. I can only use this filament for shorter prints, while I am working in close proximity to the printer. If I notice the snag occurring, some forceful pulling and rewinding will sort the issue out. I've only used one other PLA filament, and I did not experience this issue.

PROS: Decent quality prints for the price.

CONS: Filament snags coming off the spool.

    Very uneven
Bought some a few months back. It seemed thinner than the Printrbot filament. Upon measuring, I found 1.65-1.72 ,which was quite a variance. However, it printed ok with some adjustments on the printer slicing. However, mid print I had a fail and a clog. Early in the roll it was 1.65-1.72, I measured it after this happened and it was a whopping 1.74-1.81! A bit further down the spool it returns to ~1.65. I won't be buying this again.

    PROS: Cheap

    CONS: Uneven

Filament shape and diameter are not super consistent
On my first use, everything started out well, but I came back to my printer furiously printing in mid-air with no filament being extruded. Unloading the filament, I found the strand had come to a portion where the gauge had varied enough that the gear mechanism that pulls the filament in could not grab the filament. Where the gears grab the filament it causes the little indents. But then when it came to the big dent in the filament there was nothing to grab. This has only happened once I have had a successful build since then. With any luck it's the only defect I'll find but since it was my first use I'm suspect.

PROS: Pliable - not as brittle as some PLA, so doesn't break easily

CONS: Shape of filament varies, which breaks builds when the feeder mechanism can't engage filament
    January 19, 2016
    Unmanageably Inconsistent
This filament is inexpensive, and handles like an inexpensive filament. I have not yet had even a single successful print, despite more than a dozen attempts and tweaking of settings. Every print failed within less than an hour. Every print failed because the extrusion simply stopped - the extruder got clogged, a soft spot in the filament got stripped during the feed, or the filament simply snapped.

Needless to say, I'm quite disappointed that I paid for a kilogram of seemingly useless filament. Maybe it'll work in another printer if I get a different one someday. Maybe I just got a dud and the inconsistencies aren't usually as bad as I've experienced. But of course, based on what it's been like for me I must advise against buying this product.

PROS: Layer bonding is great. Adheres to the printbed easily, especially with a slightly heated bed - little to no apparent warping.

CONS: Filament diameter varies quite widely (between 1.63 and 1.87 in my case) and is alternately very soft or brittle at points, leading to repeat failures when the feed gets gummed up or clogged or the feed off the spool cracks.
