Premium 3D Printer Filament ABS 1.75MM 1kg/spool, Black

Get outstanding 3D printing results when you use 1.75mm ABS 3D Printer Filament from Monoprice!

ABS is one of the most commonly used filament types in 3D printing. It has a high tensile strength and good overall toughness. It has a low density and is softer than PLA, which means lower weight and lower cost when printing large models. Hardness is such that no white dot appears when bending.

This 1 Kg spool features a thickness of 1.75mm ±0.10mm, with a roundness variation of only 0.05mm. It has a nominal processing temperature of 230° C (446°F). Thickness and roundness factors are laser measured at the factory to ensure accuracy over the entire length of the filament.

The negatives of using ABS is that it can give off a white smoke with a concentrated odor. It is best to ensure that the printing room is well ventilated when using ABS.

Additionally, it has a high moisture absorption rate. Depending on the overall humidity level of the printing environment, an opened spool can absorb enough moisture after a couple of days that high temperature printing could cause bubbles or pocks in the extrusion. It is therefore recommended to not open a spool until you are ready to print and to store any unused portion with with silca gel and/or an active dehumidifier to reduce the amount of moisture it can absorb.

    Reel Dimensions:

    • Reel Diameter: 195mm (7.68")
    • Hub Diameter: 95mm (3.74")
    • Spindle Diameter: 38mm (1.50")
    • Reel Width: 80mm (3.15")

Glad to see Monoprice getting into this Market
I usually buy Octave filament for use with my Solidoodle, but when I saw that monoprice started carrying ABS I thought I would give it a try. My first impression was that I was impressed with how it was packed (Vacuum packed with a package of silica gel to absorb any moisture. That first attention to detail reminded me why I buy thing from monoprice.

The second thing that I noticed and I have loved this is that it has a larger radius spool and because of this the plastic doesn't fall off and get tangled the way the Octave stuff does when it is close to full. I bought white black and red and have probably done 15 hrs of printing without any filament issues. Now all we need is for Monoprice to start carrying more colors!

PROS: Larger Radius spool means less tangling cheap

    CONS: none

    No complaints
I have had good success with Monoprice for other products so I gave the ABS Filament a try.

No problems with ordering or delivery and the product arrives vacuum sealed. I have used this filament now for 5 print runs of 4"x4"x1" items on my Solidoodle 2 with no issues.

PROS: Good price, vacuum packed, good prints.

    CONS: None so far.

    Monoprice Filament in several colors
I've had several spools of Monoprice ABS filament at this point. White(x2), Black(x2), Red, Fluorescent Green, Fluorescent Yellow

For the most part the the filament has been good. I had some white that was spectacular and I could not make a bad print.

The black... same way until halfway through I got a clog. Cleaned the nozzel(torch) and start up only to clog again a few prints later. Replaced the extruder and moved up to an E3D and sure enough clogged that one too!. So I tossed the last 1/3rd of that roll.

The green... worked like a champ after I dialed it in.

Red ... has not been very good. I cannot seem to find the right temperature to print this filament at.

The yellow... worked great until I left it out for a week. I went back to print and started getting pops. It had absorbed to much moisture. I don't think this is the fault of the filament but I've left other brands on my printer for a week (only printing on the weekend) and not had this issue.

Got another roll of Black and it prints really good but is brittle. If I put to much strain on the spool it bends the filament easily. Overall though it's printed pretty good when I can keep it from bending.

Overall I like the filament from Monoprice and I would say that 70% of the time I get excellent prints. I will continue to use their filament especially the white.

    PROS: Cheap

Good spool especially like the filament keeper holes

    Generally Good quality

    Low melt point

    CONS: Inconsistent Quality

Doesn't react to acetone as strongly as other filament brands

    Update on my last review
This is an update of my first review. While this plastic seems to print out objects great, haven't had any issues with it, if you are using it for more art than parts then you will want to avoid it. The standard practice of Acetone Vapor bath / soaking in Acetone does not work very well. The octave stuff seems to smooth A LOT quicker. I soaked a print for 30 seconds and it didn't seem to effect it at all, but then it got acetone inside of it and after about an hour it was pretty much dissolved. With the Octave filament I can brush some acetone onto a print and "weld" two prints together. With the monoprice filament you need to use glue. Since most of my current printing is artistic, I probably won't buy much more of this after I use up what I have. Too much post production work.

PROS: Cheap, Prints well, hasn't clogged my extruder yet

CONS: Does not dissolve in Acetone very quickly

    Inconsistant feed mid spool
Unfortunately the price of a single spool has gone up after the release of the Monoprice 3D printer. This product at best is a three star because I was able to get half of the spool to extrude with minimal problems. No joy in losing a print and jamming up the extruder feed.

PROS: The filament will stick well on a heated glass bed between 115 and 120, extrudes well between 210 and 220.

CONS: I am mid spool with this product and have had nothing but jammed feeds do to inconsistant diameter of filament and media wrapped so tight on the roll that it will not release caosing me to have to brake down the extruder and clean the feed mechanism. wasted a lot of time and filament with this batch of product. The other minor quirk is it is not as black as PLA and turns an ashen black when extruded.

    Decent
I would stay away from this filament if you are going to use it with d-Limonene/HIPS the ABS part will dissolve away....

    PROS: -Cheap
    -Fast shipping

CONS: -It dissolved in d-Limonene where other brands of ABS filament does not dissolve in d-Limonene
-Finish on part isn't very nice

    Fluke?
Bought this because I ran out of black filament and needed it fast: I've had good experiences with Monoprice's red PLA and the reviews on the black ABS weren't bad.

But the ABS ( if it's even ABS ) that came is basically unusable.... it's brittle, doesn't stick well, and constantly clogs up the extruder on my Makerbot I can't finish a print any longer than 10 minutes... I've used plenty of brands of filament but nothing's ever been this bad.

My roll's probably just defective, but basically just wasted $35...

    PROS: Fast shipping??

    CONS: Brittle

    Poor layer adhesion

Often clogs up extruder - impure?
