There are a couple of things to note, and a few issues, that seem to stem from Windows 10's poor software.
The Surface Pro 4 is a 3:2 ratio monitor, while your screen will likely be 16:9, when using "duplicate this display" this mean black borders on the sides of your screen. It will also display at over 1080p resolution if your TV or monitor supports 1440p or higher.
When trying to display "second screen only" on a 1440p monitor (with the Surface Pro 4 screen turned off), it can be a little bit fiddly to deal with. Sometimes it won't work, but after a few attempts I got it to work, and it will display a full 16:9 with no black borders.
If your monitor doesn't have speakers and you lose audio (since Windows 10 may try to send audio through the HDMI cable to the monitor) to have audio play through the Surface Pro 4 speakers, go to Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Sound and click on the Speakers option to regain your audio.
Overall I am satisfied with my adapter.
