    Dual Mode USB-C MicroSD® Reader

Enjoy virtually unlimited storage space on your PC, Mac®, or mobile device using this Dual Mode USB Type-C MicroSD® Reader from Monoprice!

This handy little adapter is perfect for this transition period from the older USB Type-A standard to the new USB 3.1 Type-C standard. It features both a USB Type-A and a USB Type-C connector, allowing you to plug it into any USB 2.0, 3.0, or 3.1 port using with a Type-A or Type-C connector.

A microSD card slot is embedded within the Type-A connector, which is compatible with any size or type of microSD card. When fully inserted into the Type-A connector, the microSD card is virtually invisible. A small button on the connector head ejects the card sufficiently to allow it to be removed.

This is a true plug-n-play device, which requires no drivers, installations, or configurations. Simply plug any microSD card into the Type-A connector, then plug it into any female USB Type-A or Type-C port. This reader conforms to the USB 3.0 standard and therefore supports a 5.0Gbps data transfer rate, far in excess of the maximum microSD card speed.

    Too big

    Pros: It works as intended

    Cons: Too big

It works properly but since it doesn't have a small lip where the connection is, it is too big for the opening on phone cases.

    Great performance, but perplexing design.

    Pros: Fast transfer speed

    Cons: Not very durable

Fast transfer with a UHS-1 card, and this is the first USB-A/USB-C 3.0 combo reader I know of, so kudos to Monoprice for that. Unfortunately it doesn't hold up very well to the rigors of being on a keychain in-pocket. The little clip with the tie-through loop is ill-suited to having a quick-release lanyard attached, and this broke off within a month. Looping the mini-lanyard through the silicone protector caused that to start tearing.

I'd suggest a redesign of the plastic to just give one strong loop through which a mini-lanyard can tie-through, and including one in the package would be a nice touch too. It would also be better to make the microSD bay spring-loaded, as the little orange switch on the bottom is easily moved inside someone's pockets. The silicone protector keeps the microSD from falling out, but it's not perfect. It is essential, though, because it does a good job of keeping dust out of the USB-A connector. Also the black plastic on the rim of the USB-C connector has begun to crack off, though I don't think that will affect usage.

Plug too short, but works well

    Pros: Works well

Cons: Have to take the case off the phone to use it

The plug is too short to work with my Nexus 6P with a case on it, but once I removed the case it works very well

Will this work with a USB-C smartphone?

Pros: Small. Great idea to allow use on both USB-A and USB-C connectors.

Cons: I was hoping this would be an easy way to transfer large files to my phone, but could not figure out how to do it. It came with no documentation whatsoever (although that is not very surprising for a USB dongle).

I have a Nexus 6P and when I plug this in to the USB-C connector on the phone, it is not mounted or otherwise recognized. This may or may not be the fault of the device. It does mount on my notebook computer using the USB-A connector and seems to work well. I don't have any other USB-C devices to test it on.

    Exactly as described

    Pros: Small
Handles 64GB microSD card no problem
Recognized by Nexus 6P (Had to format first though)

Cons: The cover isn't very strong, a little too easy to open.

This is a great little device. It does exactly what it was intended for. Highly recommend if you want to transfer stuff from computer to USB Type C device.
