DVI & R/L Stereo Audio to HDMI® Converter

Use your giant new HDTV as a computer monitor with this DVI + Audio to HDMI® converter!

Many newer computers have HDMI output, but if you have an older computer with just DVI, you can easily convert the DVI video, plus the stereo audio, outputs into an HDMI signal that can be displayed on your large-screen HDMI TV. This simple box requires no special software. Just hook the DVI output from the computer into the converter's input (DVI-I digital only), add an audio from the sound card output into the R/L RCA input jacks, then connect the HDMI output from the converter into your TV.

The converter supports video resolutions up to 1080p (1920 x 1080) and has a video amplifier bandwidth of 225 MHz/2.25 Gbps per channel (6.75 Gbps total). It produces 2-channel, uncompressed LPCM digital audio from the 2-channel analog input. The required 5 VDC power adapter is included.

    Poor Audio Quality

Worked just fine for video but the audio quality was pretty poor with a bad hiss.

I am truly sorry to hear about the audio quality issues experienced with this converter. If I may ask, can you describe to me the full setup you were looking to achieve with this converter? Such as, what devices are you trying to connect? What are the lengths of all cables in the setup? Are any of these cables ran in-wall? Also, please include any additional items in the setup such as splitters, switches, wall plates, couplers, extensions, etc. Thank you!

Pros: This is my second DVI converter. The first item had a problem. Monoprice was great at diagnosing that the box was bad (it happens sometimes) and shipped out a replacement immediately. And Monoprice was great at providing me with a shipping label to make it very easy to return the bad product. Monoprice is really great at dealing with problems.

The product seems to work as advertized.

Cons: Every once in a while, some weird media file get played unintentionally, which shuts of the audio, requiring a power down of both my computer and the DVI converter and a fresh startup to get the audio back. It doesn't happen often, but I suspect some media files are sending an Audio Shutoff command to the device.

However, I am satisfied with this device.

I have not yet determined if my few audio problems are because of this device, or the other equipment/media I am using.

On some media, the audio seems to get louder and software, but other media the volume is consistent, which indicates it is probably a media problem. I am using VLC player, and it appears that if I fast forward, it lowers the audio then brings it back up slowly. I am looking a the VLC documentation to see how that might work.

    Pros: Easy plugging
    good sound and image transmittion

Cons: sound quality limited to 16 bit 48000 khz

I had to troubleshoot a little bit for the sound to work but
finally it was a loose connection. For the price it do the job pretty well!

Pros: It decrypts HDCP on DVI cables allowing PS3 users to record in HDMI. It has much better video quality than component cables

Cons: The audio is about half the volume it should be

An easy trick to workaround the lack of volume when recording in HDMI on PS3 is to set options in the capture card software to capture audio from RCA cables. That'll give you the regular volume

I would love it if it lasted.

Pros: Works great, until it breaks.

    Cons: Doesn't stay working long.

I wish that Monoprice offered more than a one year warranty on their electronics. I bought one of these in January 2012, and it's out of warranty now. At some point, it stopped working reliably. Another user mentioned flickering. That's what I get too. Picture noise, followed by flickering. Eventually my HDTV just gives up and says "Mode not supported". I use it on my living room PC to hook up to my big screen TV. The computer I have doesn't have an HDMI out, just DVI, so I have to send the signals back separately. This little box eliminates that hassle. When I run natively from my PC to my TV, bypassing this box, it works fine.

I don't know what specifically it is about this little guy that is malfunctioning, but I can get it to work only very rarely. I considered buying another one, but frankly it's just easier to run L/R cables back to my amplifier.

Spending another $38.56 (current price as of this writing) is out of the question right now. If there was a more modern / updated model, I might be willing to take the plunge. But it's still the same MHCDRL0101 that I have.

Monoprice, if you ever release a "version 2.0" of this I'd be more than happy to buy it. Until that time, I stand by my 3/10 rating. Worked for a while, then broke. And it's out of warranty now.
