Bourbon Street Jam Electric Bass - Black
You know the sound. It is that bass sound with solid lows and bright mids and highs, that tend to pop to the front of the mix. It is favored by artists as diverse as Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Geddy Lee (Rush), Frank Bello (Anthrax), Mel Schacher (Grand Funk Railroad), Robbie Shakespeare (The Wailers), Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report), and Robert Trujillo (Metallica). Now you can get the same type of sound with this Bourbon Street Jam Electric Bass guitar from Monoprice!
This bass guitar feature two single-coil pickups, which helps give it a brighter sound and makes it ideal for slap playing. It is constructed of basswood, with a bolt-on maple neck, and rosewood fretboard. The nut is 43mm wide. It features a separate volume control for each pickup and a single tone control, allowing you to balance the output of each pickup to produce the exact tone you want.
The bass is fitted with medium strings (.045, .065, .080, .105) and has been professionally setup by Master Luthier Roger Gresco, so it is ready to play right out of the box. It comes with a 5mm sponge gig bag and a truss wrench.

| | Solid | Pros: Better than expected
Cons: None*
*Disclaimer:I am not a bass player but a professional keyboardist looking to try something new. I picked up Rocksmith 2014 along with a couple monoprice guitars and, more recently, this bass to get my feet wet.
This is a solid piece of equipment. It has held its tuning with the original stings for the past two weeks and is a blast to play. The outer packaging arrived a bit dinged up but the contents were fine as they've packed this really well. I'm very happy with this purchase.

| | My first new bass in 20 years | Pros: Beautiful
Excellent action *
Sounds amazing *
Easy to tune
Packed extremely well for shipping
Cons: Fret buzz coming from E and G strings
My band is having a 20 year reunion this summer and I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a new bass since my Fender Squire is coming up on 21 years old. I've been a customer of Monoprice for a very long time. I love most all of their products, especially the cables. I thought that I wanted to buy a really good bass but not expensive. This was going to be a one time concert and then I would use to bass at home to play on once in awhile.
Let me get this out of the way: I love this bass. I love the design, how easy it is to play, and most importantly how it sounds*.
* There is a massive fret buzz coming from the E string and the G string when I play certain notes. I haven't had to fix or maintain a bass in quite some time so I went to http://www.reddit.com/r/bass to get some assistance. I was told that I need to fix the truss, or check the fret height, or it could be the bridge/nut.
Unfortunately, I haven't done this type of stuff in so long I don't know where to begin. There are several different walkthroughs and videos on the internet on how to fix each of those problems. However, I don't think I should have to fix them on a brand new bass that was supposedly set up by a luthier.
Being packaged as good as it was, I don't think the shipping caused this problem.
The certificate that was included with the bass said it was set up by a master luthier. How is that possible? The fret buzz is loud and ridiculous.
It's a great bass, but I think I may have to return it due to this buzz problem. It's too bad, I love how it sounds and looks. Even the M logo doesn't bother me.

| | Another Monoprice WOW! | Pros: Fantastic tone, playability, and flawless finish
Cons: Setup out of the box was not good
Gig bag is useless
This was the second instrument I've purchased from Monoprice and couldn't be happier. After buying the "Retro Vision" telecaster for my son, I bought this bass for myself. Out of the box, I was again taken by the fit, finish and feel of this instrument - all exceptional. A few weeks went by before I purchased an amp to plug it in, but when I finally did, I have to say I was blown away. The quality of the tone and the range of tones I am able to produce are utterly fantastic. This bass would be a bargain at $500, and I dare say there are probably some out there selling for $1000 that aren't as good as this one.
My only complaints concern the supposed setup by a "master luthier" and the gig bag. The setup out of the box was atrocious. The action and intonation was off to such a degree the instrument was unplayable. It's an easy 20 minute job to fix it but please don't go on in your advertising about how all the guitars set up before leaving your doors. This one had not been touched by anyone who knows anything about guitars. Also, the gig bag is a plastic, crinkly joke. Monoprice should either spend a few dollars more to improve the quality of the materials used in the bag or leave it out altogether. It takes away from the overall quality of the instrument and has no practical value other than keep the dust off. For these reasons, I took 2 points off my rating.
That being said, it's a fantastic instrument that I highly recommend. I haven't seen anything that comes close at twice the price.

| | Great value for price, but be prepared | Pros: Excellent construction
Ringing, Geddy Lee-worthy tone
Crazy low price
Cons: Initial setup is utterly broken
Strings cut too short
I'm not sure what it means to have a "master luthier" sign off on the instrument, but as shipped, my bass was set up to be unplayable. Neck was too straight and every string buzzed on every fret. I tried to set up the bass according to Fender recommendations. Buzzing reduced after relieving the neck tension, but the 3rd and 4th strings started rattling when played open. Both strings had been strung with too few windings around the tuning peg, so when I reduced the neck tension they didn't put enough pressure on the nut. The strings are cut, so nothing to do about it but replace them you should incorporate new strings in the price. After correcting the neck, I had to lower the 1st and 4th strings to the lowest position the saddle would allow. Hope I don't need to go lower. Finally, the 2nd and 3rd strings still buzz more than my preference from frets 5 through 8.
My out-of-box experience was not favorable, but on the whole I like the instrument, at least relative to the cost. The sound is exactly the sharp single-coil tone I was looking for. When amped appropriately, think Rush from Counterparts through Clockwork Angels. Every individual component seems to be well-made, although I get the impression it was assembled by people who have never played a bass. The remaining fret buzz is a concern, but it's not a big problem given my playing style. Others should be careful. Had I paid twice this much I would have returned it without a second thought.

| | Received Defective Unit | Pros: Electronics seemed okay, great return policy
Cons: Paint finish problems, Wood finish problems, intense vibrating and buzzing.
I've been playing 15+ years and purchased this for as a backup bass. I've been really happy with all of my Monoprice purchases and was impressed with the 6-string guitars I payed at NAMM 2014 so I thought I'd give it a try.
The one I received had streaks in the finish near the neck, looks like it was touched or rubbed against before the paint was fully dry. Burrs in the wood on the neck where it meets the body. "A" and "G" strings were extremely buzzy (not fret buzz), and could not be fixed adjusting the bridge. Not just string or fret buzz, it seemed to vibrate the entire neck which affected the tone tremendously. I have a feeling the truss rod had been disconnected or something before I received it because gentle pressure on the neck would cause the strings to lay flat and limp on the fretboard. Just not a solid peice. I am shipping it back today for a replacement hoping I just had bad luck on this one, it happens. I'm hoping the next one will turn out better and I just received a defective one that fell through the cracks. At this price I'm not expecting a premium bass, I was just hoping for something playable in an emergency backup situation.
Not sure how such a defective unit instrument could pass inspection.

by Kevin Hi John,
I received my replacement bass yesterday and it sounds soo much better. The black finish is also prestine so I must have just had bad luck with the last one.
