Fixed my remote legacy parallel printer situation

Pros: Price
Easy to install

Cons: USB 1.1 devices only

I have a dot matrix printer in remote location that does our 3 copy invoice printing. The printer works with a Parrallel to USB cable and (2) 10' USB Extension Cables. I could not get it to work using 1 longer USB extension cable, even tried the active USB extender cable. This USB over CAT-5 worked great for me.

Works, but severely limits USB power

Pros: - Great range.
- Just works.

Cons: - USB 1.1 only. Don't expect blistering speeds. Keyboards/Remotes/Mice will work just fine. USB sticks or hard drives will work, but SLOWLY. Webcams/USB sound cards/USB Microphones/USB TV Tuners/USB Ethernet adapters, or anything else that needs to transfer data at any kind of higher speed, might not work at all.

-Longer cords seem to zap up the power from the PC's USB port. Try using a powered USB hub on the opposite side as the PC to overcome this.

The extension works perfectly for me, but can fail if I plug in a device that requires more than just basic USB power. I originally tried to use it over a 100ft Cat6 cable with an unpowered two port USB hub to connect both my Windows Media Center Remote and my Logitech K400 Wireless Keyboard/Trackpad. This would not work.

Without the unpowered hub, either device would work just fine on their own.

One workaround for this, is to use a powered USB hub on the USB device (not PC) end. This way the devices get power from the powered USB hub, and don't need to draw that power over the Ethernet cable. This seems to work for me. So, if you need to use more than one low power device (multiple low power devices, or one high power device) try using a powered USB hub.

Works Great!

I tried first to make my own, soldering the two ends of a USB cable onto a long (40'!) Cat-5e cable, and it didn't work... but this does! Not sure what kind of magic they're doing in there, but at this price, who cares.

Works as advertised, but...

Pros: Plug & play works fine.

Cons: Only works up to Windows 7, or older (6 yr old OS, at the time of this writing).

Works as advertised, but only up to USB v1.1 (slow) & only up to Windows 7 (old).

great for remote camera control

worked for remote control of DSLR camera (canon 5d mk 3) with 75ft and 50ft cable lengths (cat6). Live video was a little choppy but other camera functions worked just fine.
