| | Needs external power | Pros: Just to add to my previous review. I still love the unit but I did experience some problems where the monitor and keyboard would go whacky and I would have to press the reset button on the unit (every few days) to get it working again.I fixed this by plugging in an old 5vt power supply from a dead DLink switch. I've never had to reset the unit since (months).
Cons: Needs external power to be completely stable. External power supply should come with it (although I grant they are cheap and easy to find).
Excellent unit if an external power supply is used. Trouble free.

| | Works as advertised | Pros: * Performs as advertised, allows control of 4 PCs using USB, remotely switchable via double scroll lock + keys
* small can be set on top of nearly anything, but hefty so it does not slide. It's made of metal, feel like a solid brick! I could throw this at something and it would not be damaged
Cons: * Does not function with an active repeater cable in series with keyboard (e.g. prod 8490)
* Built in USB hubs and Multimedia keyboard options do not function with this. Basic keyboard only! No volume control or playback functions work, nor does the USB ports on the rear of my keyboard not a huge deal to me
* Rack ears are not available anywhere, despite "compatibility" I cannot find them to order, and see others with the same situation
This was my 2nd try at getting my rack of equipment remotely switchable directly to a console. As I don't sit directly next to the server rack, I had previously run active USB cables (33ft) to this location so I could control from my desk. Other KVM switches also did not function with an active cable as well, so it may be inherent to USB KVMs
It does however function with a passive USB to cat5 extender such as prod 6042, which was my solution for my situation. Beats remote KVMs with their Java crap!

| | USB 4 port KVM | Pros: Use with Wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. Reasonable price.
Cons: None
Works great. Replaced 2 port TrendNet KVM switch with this unit. I needed to connect a laptop and two desktops. This unit handles it perfectly. Initially it did not work because I tried to reuse the existing cables I had. It did not work until I used the supplied cables. Since the cables came with the unit this is not an issue. Just be aware that the cable used may make a difference if you don't use the supplied cables. The cables supplied were long enough for my use. After 1 month of constant use I have had no glitches, so very pleased with the results.
Delivery of the unit was very quick so no problems there either.

| | 3 Times Not A Charm | Pros: Works great as a VM switch.
Cons: 1. Has holes on the sides for rack brackets, but MonoPrice does not offer them, nor do they know where I can get them third party. The 8 port model comes with the brackets.
2. Has a port for an AC adapter, but again Monoprice does not offer it. The 8 port model comes with it.
Ordered the first one of these only to find that when everything is plugged in, the mouse blinks and the keyboard is dead. After unplugging and replugging in the cable the unit fries and all 8 lights are on. The select buttons don't switch between the computer any more. Resetting does nothing. Unplugging all the cable but one (for power) does not help either. Contacted MonoPrice for a replacement, but that didn't help either. Both the second and third unit they sent had the same problem - mouse blinks and keyboard is dead. When the keyboard is unplugged, the mouse works. Tried just having the keyboard plugged in without the mouse, but the keyboard still wouldn't work.
On the plus side, MonoPrice has a great support staff and return policy.

| | Outstanding! | Pros: Below - all good with no problems whatsoever
Cons: I really can't find any
This is the unit I've been looking for the last several years so pardon the gush. It's the perfect little 4 port workbench KVM in my estimation. It is affordable and has all cables included. USB and PS2 plugs allow me to not worry about adapters when I'm working on multiple machines. I don't get hangups or confusion from the switch when I'm bouncing around to units that are not powered up. The keyboard macros work perfectly (and are simple) so I don't have to physically touch the unit.
