| | sorry -didn't work | Pros: inexpensive, easy to use
Cons: didn't work.
it would be great to say this work as designed, but it just didn't make a difference in my setup. I have a 35' HDMI cable and was getting video and audio dropouts. This unit didn't help things at all. I replaced it with a powered repeater/extender and that did the trick. At least in my situation, I needed a powered unit.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Steve,
Thank you for your review on PID 2849. I am truly sorry to hear that this repeater didn't work out for your setup. If I may ask, what was the source device you were looking to connect? Are there any additional devices connected in between such as a switch, splitter, wall plate, etc.? What is the length of the other cable in this setup? Also, can we check the orientation of the repeater to make sure that the "source" side of the extender is pointed towards the source (cable box, gaming console, bluray player, etc.) and the "sink" is going towards the display? Please let me know so I can best assist you with this issue. Thank you in advance!

by Steve Benkin the source is a sony blu-ray player, connected to a benq front projector using a 35' monoprice redmere HDMI cable. I tried using both ends of the extender, and still got drop outs. Since I now have a working system, I am not included to mess with it anymore. Perhaps my unit was defective, perhaps it wasn't strong enough....Sorry - I did try to make it work.
by Monoprice Administrator I see - that cable may be the issue, unfortunately. Since Redmere cables are active and already have a chip built into them to equalize the signal, we do not recommend using any repeaters with them. Redmere cables work best when connected to a source device and display. When using an HDMI repeater with Redmere cables, they usually fail to reliably transmit the video signal because each item is trying to do the same thing. Also, Redmere cables often do not work well when used with any regular couplers or extension cables as they draw power from the display to work and are calibrated for their specific length. My apologies for any trouble this may have caused and I hope this helps.

| | Didn't work for my situation | Pros: Cheap
Cons: Didn't help
I was trying to resolve a HDMI sync issue between my new Denon AV receiver and my Epson projector with a 50 foot HDMI cable but this unit didn't help. My Onkyo receiver had no such issues.

| | Doesn't appear to work | Pros: Simple
Cons: Doesn't work
I plugged this into my home setup and the TV came up blank, saying there was no input. My setup is the Monoprice 4x4 HDMI Matrix into a 50 foot Twisted Veins High Speed HDMI cable (26 AWG, I believe) into the SOURCE connection of the extender/repeater then the SINK into a generic 3 ft HDMI cable into the TV itself. In this setup the TV acts like it is receiving no signal. When I remove the repeater and 3 ft HDMI cable and plug the 50 foot cable directly in, it seems to work fine without it. (The 3 ft cable was previously in use so I know that cable works). The Twisted Veins cable is non-amplified, so this should work, I believe.
I can see from other comments that Monoprice appears to recommend 24 AWG HDMI cables, but the technical details state 28 AWG should work up to 36 meters (118 feet) so again this should be working. Not sure if my amplifier/extender is just dead on arrival.

| | Didn't work at all | Pros: Cheap, quick ordering and delivery
Cons: Didn't work
I had high hopes for this item based on the reviews, which said it either worked perfectly or failed abjectly. Mine failed abjectly. I am using a Marantz NR-1403 receiver which passes video signal from my sources (Roku, blu-ray player) to an Epson 1080UB projector over a 30ft HDMI cable. The cable is fine - it's been replaced twice and tested. I bought the repeater to resolve handshake and image cut-out issues from the receiver. In any case, I installed the repeated at the end of the 30ft cable closest to my projector, per the instructions, and added a section of working 3ft HDMI cable to link the repeater to the projector. After I did this the picture would pass for a second and be very shimmery, or not pass at all. Reversing the repeater caused the picture to fail completely. Trying to place the repeater at the receiver end of the line caused the picture to not transmit at all. Basically this product either blocked/did not transmit the signal completely, or degraded the picture I was getting before.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello,
Thank you for your review and truly sorry to hear about the issues experienced with PID 2849. If I may ask, what gauge (AWG) are the 30ft and 3ft HDMI cables in use? Do you happen to have other cables that we can try with the equalizer? Also, can we test the equalizer with a different source (such as to the Roku or Bluray player directly) just to further isolate what the issue may be? What about with a different display? When powering on the setup, I recommend starting with the projector and working your way backwards to the source. This power sequence can help avoid possible HDMI handshaking issues. Please let me know your results so we can look into this matter further. Thank you in advance!

| | Does not work with Macbook Pro using Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter | Pros: Nothing
Cons: Does not work with connecting a Macbook Pro using Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (Monoprice PID 5311)
Not working for my setup. I wanted to use this HDMI Extender with my Macbook Pro (2010) using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Please be advised that I have been connecting my Macbook Pro to my HDTV using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (Monoprice PID 5311) without any issues so I thought this HDMI Extender would work with my setup. Unfortunately I get fuzzy & cloudy image signal on the screen which is not acceptable. I want my money back!
by Monoprice Administrator Hello,
Thank you for your review and truly sorry to hear about your experience with PID 2849. What is the length and gauge of the HDMi cables in use? Keep in mind the more devices you add to your setup the greater chance there is of signal degradation. It is recommended to use 24 AWG HDMI with devices such as adapters and extenders as they tend to put a heavier load on the signal passing through, which can lead to handshaking issues. Using 24 AWG HDMI lowers the chance of signal degradation and improves signal reliability.
Can you verify that the HDMI cables in use are 24 AWG? Please let me know so that I may further assist you. Thank you for your cooperation in the matter.
