| Commercial Series Professional Standard HDMI® Cable, 50ft Black | | | Question: What is AWG? | Answer: AWG stands for "American Wire Gauge." It is the thickness of the wire inside the cable. The lower number AWG denotes thicker wiring and thicker overall cable. Thicker cables are recommended for longer cable runs because they offer less resistance along the signal path.
| | Question: What does the gold plating refer to? | | Answer: Gold plating refers to the connectors. Gold plating provides resistance against corrosion that would otherwise impede signal transfer and could damage connections on equipment. | | Question: What is the performance benefit of Tin and Silver Plating? | Answer: Tin and silver plating refer to plating on the copper wire conduits inside the cable. The plating is to control the "skin effect." The skin effect is the tendancy of digital signals to travel along the surface of a wire and be more suceptible to surface disipation. The plating is suppose to lock the signal in the copper core.
Silver is a better conductor of electricity than tin and therefore offers better signal integrity. | Question: These cables say "For In-Wall Use." Does that mean they can only be used in wall? What is CL2? | Answer: "For In-Wall Use" refers to the CL2 rating these cables receive from Underwriters Laboratories (UL). It means that these cables have a slow burning outer jacket, should meet most fire codes and are safe for in-wall installations.
The CL2 rating does not affect the appearance or performance of the cables. They can be used in or out of wall. | | Question: How do I know if I need male to male cables or male to female? | Answer: As a rule, consumer electronics devices ALWAYS have female ports on them. (a protruding male connector would break off too easily) So, for connecting two devices together, you need a male to male cable.
Male to female cables are used to extend existing cables. |

| | Fixed my Problem | Pros: Worked.
Cons: Kinda bulky, hard to bed around tight angles.
Had an issue with a cheap 50ft HDMI run though the ceiling, the signal would drop out every 15min. Ran this cable in its place and everything is smooth sailing. Would only use this for in wall runs now.

| | Unstable (Intermittent) Signal with this Cable | Pros: Build quality is high, just like all monoprice products I've ever bought.
Cons: Signal is unstable (intermittent), meaning it comes and goes. Sometimes you have an HDMI signal, and sometimes you don't.
When I first installed this cable, sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn't. Eventually, it just completely stopped working altogether. I replaced this cable with a 50-foot long redmere cable (bought here, from monoprice) and it works great. Not only does the redmere work without any problems, but the redmere cable is lighter and more slender. What I've realized about HDMI is that it doesn't seem to work well over long runs the signal is likely to be unstable. I bought another monoprice HDMI cable, 15 feet long (4036) and it is also giving me problems, working sometimes but not other times. If you are going to do a long run with an HDMI (I'm thinking anything in excess of 10 to 12 feet), I would highly recommend using a redmere cable. I guess the chips in the redmere cables actually mean the difference between a reliable connection and an unstable one. By the way, other non-redmere HDMI cables I've bought from monoprice, probably 10-foot long or less, have worked perfectly well. Again, I think HDMI technology simply doesn't work well over longer runs.

| Pros: Great picture point-to-point
Cons: At 50', do not use with anything between source and screen
Cable is pretty stiff
I purchased this cable to connect my xbox and dvd player from a 1st floor entertainment closet to a basement tv. However, I was using a switcher/splitter (8155) between these two sources and the TV). The signal was compromised when using the switcher/splitter but worked when plugged directly into the source. I had to pull the cable from the walls, return it, and purchase the 50' Redmere version (9172) and re-run it. The Redmere apparently has some sort of signal boosting capability. It works and was only about $2-3 more. Monoprice should note this limitation on this product's description and redirect customers to the Redmere if anything is going between the source and TV. Lesson learned at the price of $18 return shipping.
