8CH 720P Network Video Recorder 1080P Playback - Built in Power Over Ethernet with 1TB HDD
Control and power up to eight IP-based PoE video cameras using this 8-Channel H.264 PoE 1080p Network Video Recorder (NVR) with 1TB HDD from Monoprice!
This NVR is designed to connect to IP-based video surveillance cameras using Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable. It supports the Power over Ethernet (PoE) feature, so you don't need to run separate power lines to your cameras. Each of the eight channels supports dual streaming and each channel can be configured for a different resolution, frame rate, bit rate, image quality, etc.
The NVR can be connected to one or more monitors using either the HDMI or VGA video interface, each of which supports display resolutions up to 1920x1080p. The Live view can display 1, 2, 4, or 8 channels and the display sequence is fully customizable. It supports motion detection, video tampering detection, video content analysis, video exception, and video loss alarm functions and includes the ability to create custom privacy masks.
It includes a 1TB hard drive, so you can hook it up and start using it right out of the box. The internal drive can be replaced and an additional drive installed, each up to 4TB in size. Up to eight NAS drives, or seven NAS and one IP SAN drives, can be connected for additional storage capacity.
In addition to full local control, the NVR can be fully managed from a remote location using a web accessible interface, including the ability to remotely lock out local mouse or remote control access. Recordings can be remotely viewed, managed, and backed up as well. A pre-record and post-record feature allows you to include video from a few seconds before an alarm event until a few seconds after the alarm ceases.

| | Not for Amateurs... | Pros: Picture Quality Ease of Installation
Cons: User Manual Ease of setting up viewing from a remote location
I ordered this NVR with 4 Monoprice cameras. The local connection works great, and the picture quality is very good. The interface is simple when viewing on a monitor in the house. However, I ordered the system to view remotely from my tablet/phone. After 3 months and countless hours I still can't figure how to accomplish this. The user manual is very vague and does not explain in simple terms how to view remotely. I wouldn't consider myself an expert, or an amateur. I have very basic networking skills and can't figure it out!

| Pros: Inexpensive, works reliably and quickly, lots of features, web admin interface is useful and quick, does what it needs to do.
Cons: Not a lot of documentation, browser plugin support is a bit wacky (see user comments for location), odd bugs here and there. No rack mount ears supplied.
Used this in tandem with 4 dome cameras. Using included 1TB HD fired up and immediately was in, configuring cameras. If you configure a camera and then unplug it, it forgets the camera settings, motion settings, and schedule. You must re-create when you plug it back in. Would be nice if it remembered the camera settings.
Once you get the browser plugin configured, it's pretty straightforward. Unlike other reviewers, I was easily able to get email notifications and motion capture working. I used my local Exchange server for simple SMTP and I got an email notification as soon as motion was activated. I like that I can record continuously during business hours and switch to motion after hours to save on disk usage.
Playback is intuitive and easy. No complaints. For the money, including the cameras I got from Monoprice, this is an outstanding value. I'll be installing the 4 channel version at my house soon.

| | Monoprice NVR - Great Unit | Pros: Great features for the cost if you are looking for a simple NVR system.
Can use Hikvision iVMS-4500 and iVMS-4500 HDR apps to view NVR from mobile device.
Separate network for cameras shields from outside network access along cams to be "open"/ autoconfig
Cons: Documentation is not the best. You need to have a solid level of network understanding to successfully configure this system. Security on the system is very weak. Basic features like too many password attempt lockout to prevent brute force attacks are missing. Thus far I have not been able to get motion sensing or email notices to work.
Using this with Dahua cameras and the cameras were auto detected and configured as "plug and play"
The device is made by Hikvision so you need to use their plug ins to access with web browser. Currently their apps work but there is no guaranty that updates will continue to be compatible.

| | Solution for Mac OS-X Safari and Firefox | Pros: Can't beat the price, another monoprice winner
Cons: it's all good now that it works on my Mac
Got "no plug-in detected" error with your Mac browsers?
http://www.hikvision.com/en/us/download.asp?navid=3
Download "plug-in for Mac OS-X", install the file (make sure Security & Privacy doesn't block the downloaded file from installing). Close your browser and re-open it, log in to the NVR app and your cameras should display without (in Safari and Firefox). Haven't gotten Chrome to work yet, any takers for that fix?

| | So so... | Pros: -Does plug and play with monoprice camera really well (I used 12462)
-Has its own ethernet jacks that supply power to the cameras. It creates its own little subnet to keep camera traffic off your main network which is great. You can still have a camera somewhere else on your main network and tell it the IP address of it and that works too.
-You can use it as a standalone device with an hdmi or vga monitor and a mouse or work with it remotely through a browser.
Cons: -Browser viewing requires a plugin to be installed first that isn't compatible with 64-bit browsers. I had to install a 32-bit browser just to see the video. This ought to be an easy fix but who knows if/when that ever is going to happen.
-I wasn't able to get the camera to only send video to the recorder when motion was detected. I do have a few spots where I need to install cameras far enough away from the unit where I wont be able to plug the camera directly into the recorder so the camera has to be on my main network. If the camera is always streaming instead of only streaming when it detects motion, my network will be constantly loaded with useless data. Since I have a couple of wifi bridges on my network that can be easily saturated, this whole setup is a no-go. Monoprice support didn't think this was possible to do.
So I figured the technology had to have advanced enough by now where the cameras were smart enough to detect motion and only use the network when they sense activity and therefore have to send data over it. I think the manufacturer makes the assumption that all cameras will be close enough that you can wire each camera directly to the ports on the back of the recorder. If that were the case, there would be no issue since it essentially would be running its own private network and who cares what happens on that.. In my case, however, a couple would be close enough but several would not be.
The camera I'm using certainly appears to support the detection of motion. I just can't get it to work with the recorder in an intelligent way. That means I can't use one DVR for my location and still be able to use my network.
