| | NICE SOUND | Pros: wonderful sound and a comfortable fit
Cons: adjustable headband could be a little smoother would like to be able to wear them more comfortably with the sound cord on the right side
for the price these headphones are very good their frequency response is remarkable the sound quality is not outstanding, but quite crisp and clear without interference the horizontally pivoting ear-cups helps to make them fit comfortably but I would have like it if they also spun on their axis to make them easy to fit on opposite sides of my head if I needed the sound cord to be placed on the right side the adjustable headband can be a little bit of a challenge at times to adjust to the desirable fit the ear cups are soft and comfortable

| | Disappointing | Brought the 12230's to because I needed a second set of headphones. Two years ago I purchased a pair of Monoprice's 8323's. The 8323's are extraordinary and I figured the 12230's would be a step up since they cost about 3-4 times more. and got great reviews. Was very impressed with the packaging, how the 12330's looked, and fit on my head. Unfortunately upon listening, they sounded tinny and lacked bass. In addition, the midrange was muddy and lacked definition. If they sounded as good as the 8223's I would have been happy and kept them. Instead, I ate the return shipping charge and sent them back. I was going to order a second pair of 8323's in its place but was reluctant as I was afraid the quality of the 8323's are not the same today as they were two years ago.

| | Expected more | Purchased a pair of 8323's a year ago. Love them.. Instead of purchasing another pair of the 8323's I purchased the 12230's expecting them to be a step up at ~4 times the price. ($70 vs $16). The 12230's also had good reviews. When I opened the package I was very much impressed. They looked great and felt terrific on my head. A real quality product. Unfortunately, upon listening that were tinny and lacked bass and clarity of the 8323's. I was extremely disappointed. If they sounded comparable to the 8323's I would have been happy and kept them. Returned them and had to eat the return postage. Now reluctant to purchase another pair of the 8323's. My thinking is that perhaps the quality of the 8323's might not be the same.

| | Good Headphones for the price, but underwhelming | Pros: Physically feels great Solid Build Quality Good Materials on everything but the cable Very comfortable
Cons: No low end, at all. Disappointing dynamic range The included cable feels cheap and doesn't connect well, but is replaceable.
I, among many others, loved my Monoprice 8323 headphones. These were SERIOUSLY good headphones for the price. When they came out with these, I was excited because I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the 8323's and they were $20 at the time, so for $70 my expectations were to be very pleasantly surprised.
I really enjoy the feel of these and they come with a nice hard shell case. That is a nice touch. The padding is soft yet supportive and other users have reported that these cups are awfully small for over the ear type headphones and they were correct. My ears barely fit inside the cups and there is some pinching. The headband is seriously soft though and quite nice.
They seem to squeeze a bit though. What I mean by that is when you adjust the proper setting height on the cups, the inward pressure generated by the band is quite a lot. Its noticeable, but not a deal breaker. Overall, the build quality is solid and leaps and bounds ahead of the 8323's and they feel incredible and comfortable.
Where I was let down was the sound quality. The previous version Monoprice headphones had a high dynamic range. These sound heavily driven by the mids and high tones. There is a significant lack of lows. I listen to all kinds of music and from blues to hip hop, its noticeable that these just don't have much "punch". It sounds restrained and even at low volumes the highs are far too prevalent and there is NO bass. I'm not a bass thumping kind of person, but there needs to be an adjustment to these ASAP because there is almost NO bass here, and for a dynamic sound there needs to be some low level punch or else the music just sounds tinny and light.
Its like buying a luxury car that only has a 3 cylinder engine. It feels nice, but when you get going its depressing.
Also after about 2 sessions of listening to music with these I actually replaced the cord that came with them. I couldn't stand it anymore. The jack wasn't plugging in easily, it felt cheap, and it was too short. The buttons are a nice touch, the controls are there if you need them, but if you don't - definitely change out the cord.

| | Mid boost | Pros: General Purpose Music Listening
Cons: Not really Hi Fi sounding in my experience.
The mids on these dominate the sound. Maybe these are designed for voice? The highs are also noticeably diminished and the bass is OK. Definitely not audiophile or studio quality in my opinion. The build quality is descent and the case is a nice touch though for the price.
