3D printing is the hot ticket now, primarily because it allows you to cheaply produce a design prototype prior to manufacture and, as can be seen from news reports, even make finished, usable products.
This 3D printer features a dual extrusion head, which allows for two color print jobs. It can use 1.75mm ABS, PLA, and PVA filaments and supports layer thicknesses from 0.1 ~ 0.5 mm. The extruder can be heated to 250°C and the metal heating plate can be heated to 120°C. It prints at a rate of 24cc per hour.
The printer comes with two 1kg reels of PLA filament.

The printer was great once we got the bed leveled out. It took running the leveling program a couple of times. I like the versatility of ABS, PLA, and dissolvable filaments. The Replicator G software that comes with it is not very good. If you can use another program I would suggest it.

I purchased this printer after a considerable amount of research on printers in the sub-thousand-dollar range, with respect to feature set and capabilities. The feature set looked most impressive, dual extrusion, a heated build plate, a decent build volume, and fully assembled for less than a thousand dollars? Hard to believe!
My first impression was quite good, the build quality of the unit is quite respectable for a Chinese import machine. The lead screw is of good quality, the fit and finish are entirely acceptable, and the bed taping was well-placed and bubble free. What little assembly was required went quickly and exactly per the instructions. The built-in menus have a fair bit of lag and can be a tad hard to navigate, finding the right command can be a bit challenging, but they work just fine. Up to this point, I was entirely pleased with the printer! Bed leveling was amazingly challenging, unfortunately, given that the bed leveling script is written for a four-screw-on-corners bed leveling system, and this printer has a three-screw triangle system. Following the directions on screen will NOT level the bed for you properly. You will need to jog the printer around to the corners and adjust until you have it level yourself. More on this later.
Unfortunately, my troubles started as soon as I plugged it into my computer. Windows 10 did not want to correctly identify the device, drivers would not install properly, and the COM port would not connect to the printing software most of the time. After trying several programs and a number of suggested solutions, I was finally able to get Matter Control to connect to the printer. Victory! … Not quite. My first print attempt used standard settings for PLA, using white filament with just the right extruder for simplicity. 70C for the bed, and 190C for the extruder. I selected a skirt (as I commonly do, this isn’t my first 3D printing experience), just to make sure the nozzle was clear, and sent the print. The right extruder laid down the skirt just as it was supposed to… then the left, unheated nozzle swept over the skirt, tore it off the bed, and dumped it into the print. The two nozzles weren’t coplanar! I spent a bit of time thinking on it, and just decided to heat the left nozzle as well from Matter Control, so hopefully it would flow any material it touched instead of tearing it off the bed. This was moderately successful, and I was able to get the test object (a 1.5x1.5x.5” cube with 10% hexagonal infill) to print. Unfortunately, the corners didn’t stick, so it ended up as a warped, out-of-shape mess. Cooled the bed and went to blue painter’s tape for my surface with a cold bed and a 200C extruder. That one printed acceptably. Great, problem solved! I’ll try a test with both extruders! No dice. Ever. I tried about a dozen different attempts at dual extruding, and was never even vaguely successful. I could get it to print with either extruder, but never both at once. It would raft with one extruder, as ordered… then simply not extrude anything at all from the other side as it continued printing up into the air. Or it would print the entire object with one material regardless of what it was supposed to be using. Or it’d skip rafting with one material, just moving the head around, then it would try to start extruding with the other nozzle well into the air and build a pile of plastic brillo.
After several days of printing a 95+% failure rate, and becoming amazingly frustrated with the total lack of supporting material, I packed the entire thing up and sent it back to Monoprice. Physically, I think the printer is just fine. On the electronics-and-software side, it is so lacking as to be unusable as far as I can tell. Perhaps someone who is very experienced troubleshooting driver issues and dealing with the Chinse RAMPS variant this unit uses could get it working properly, but I was not able to. I will most likely be building a RAMBO-based printer myself in a few weeks, working with a dedicated place that can provide support to get it running if I need it.
Monoprice has been great through the entire thing, they gave me no trouble with the RMA at all, certainly no smear on them here! Just a printer that didn’t live up to the promise it held. Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Not the smoothest experience out of the box, but for this price I think you get quite a lot. You'll need to be a tiny bit of a tinkerer to enjoy this (that's why you're getting a 3d printer in the first place right ?)
Once everything is set up the print quality is quite good.
I assumed there was nothing specific about the Monoprice and it was just a rebranded Flashforge Creator Pro with Atmega2560. So I used these information to update the firmware out of the box to the latest sailfish : http://www.sailfishfirmware.com/
So far no issue with that.

| | No way you'll beat this price anywhere! | Pros: Pros: Great price, simple interface, VERY easy to assemble (you could very easily start printing a test with the included files on the SD card in 30-60 minutes). They give you 2 generous spools of PLA material (black and white) to start with. The 9"x6"x6" print volume is pretty reasonable for what you're paying. This should cover most home projects. The printer runs fairly quiet, I have it in my living room and can still watch TV without cranking it up. I bet if you bought the flashforge cover and fabricated a front door it would hardly be noticeable (and would keep the heat in while printing ABS).
Cons: Cons: SD card location stinks, I'd reccomend getting an SD card extender to relocate, Unit generates static while running (you should dissipate any static by touching case before inserting card so you don't zap it). The replicatorG software they recommend is slow and crappy, not that makerbot or cura are much better. Since you're spending so little on this printer, I think the $150 investment in Simplify3d is WELL worth it just for the better print paths and support. Wish it had a glass bed instead of the aluminum (kapton tape will quickly get ripped up for larger prints). Even better would be a PEI bed even if they had to raise the price by $20-$30. I had issues with my 1st printer where the left head would rip up the raft support that the right extruder put down, but don't seem to have issues anymore (perhaps simplify3d has better heat settings?), but this is a potential issue with any dual extruder. If you do plan on doing dual extruding, keep in mind it doesn't run them very consecutively.. It will run one material's layer, pause, then dump the code for the other spool for that layer. This can slow down printing a lot.
I had a display issue with mine, garbled data and contrast bars (something that the more expensive version this was copied from also has issues with). One solution was to wrap the data cable in foil tape, which I have done to the replacement printer I got (yes, monoprice has a very good return policy, and will pay for shipping to return and send a new one much like amazon). New printer dare I say is working even better than the first (prints stick, lines are clean). Mine had a september 2015 build date which means stock is only a few months old.

Cons: Black PLA is a bit too glossy for my tastes. Would prefer the option to have a more matte filament.
Two extrusion screws where loose so the extruders eventually started to move during a print. Would highly recommend double checking screws before you start printing.
I was gifted this machine from a family member awhile back. Only recently have I unboxed it and began printing some of my 3D artwork. I have found that not only is this printer fairly simple to use, it is capable of doing some incredibly detailed 3D prints.
I quickly learned that in order to really get in and print models I needed more control via software. I found that Simplify3D has dramatically improved my prints, both in time and in quality over a very short period of time. It took some time to find the best settings for this printer, but all in all I am extremely pleased with the results. I did upgrade the nozzle to a smaller .2mm nozzle from Swiss Micro to be able to print at a resolution of .05mm.
Highly recommend this machine, especially if you're a 3D artist!
