Premium 3D Printer Filament PLA 3MM 1kg/spool, White
Get outstanding 3D printing results when you use 3.0mm PLA 3D Printer Filament from Monoprice!
PLA is a good choice for a printing material if you are looking for high accuracy and high resolution. It extrudes at lower temperatures, does not require a heated base, and has a very low shrinkage rate (0.3%). PLA is harder than ABS, but is therefore also a bit more brittle. Additionally, PLA is a plant-based plastic, which means that it is biodegradable and gives off a slightly sweet odor, like roasting corn.
This 1 Kg spool features a thickness of 3.0mm ±0.10mm, with a roundness variation of only 0.03mm. It has a nominal processing temperature of 185° C (365°F). Thickness and roundness factors are laser measured at the factory to ensure accuracy over the entire length of the filament.
The negatives of using PLA is that it is vulnerable to degradation from moisture, sunlight, and heat. Additionally, it is more prone to overheating during processing, which can cause dripping and drooping if it gets too hot.

| | PLA Happyness | Pros: Great Product. Won't go any where else.
Cons: I only wish they had more colors.
I took a chance and bought white, black, green, orange and red all before trying them out. As usual with Mono Price products I was taken care of. I'm using a Wanhao 5s printer and have printed objects over 20 inches tall with the PLA having no issues with consistency.

| | Interesting material | Pros: Vacuum sealed to keep out moisture. Nice looking, matte white. I like that it isn't shiny and semi transparent. It looks more like ABS in that regard.
Cons: Not exactly a con, necessarily, but this is a different material than the other monoprice filament I've used (blue and red). The prints weren't working with the same settings for all the other PLA. The prints were problematic and had inconsistent extrusion and left under extruded, cobweb-like infill. Printing at a higher temperature solved a lot of the issues. 200 degrees C made it goe down real smooth, like Elmer's glue. It even seemed a little puddley, but made a really nice flat face against the bed, and didn't seem to settle out from the boundary much. The higher temp does make it start to ooze immediately during travel moves, which might just need a bigger retraction move. So far I'm printing at 200c, with the heated bed at 50c, and a 7mm retraction before traveling movements.
It might be a little more brittle than the other colors monoprice sells, but nothing's broken yet, including some bosses that got 1) drilled out, and 2) had self tapping sheet metal screws screwed into them, which seems to indicate it will work for printing mechanical pieces, though I haven't tried making any snap fit parts, which can be tricky with PLA, in general.
Of note is that white PLA by other sellers also seems to present similar differences to the other colors, and require some experimenting with the settings to get optimal results.
All in all I'm glad I got this. I learned some more about the printer settings, and after adjusting said settings have gotten some nice matte white prints.

| | Not bad | Pros: Inexpensive. Decent print quality. Sticks to hot glass coated with a thin layer of dilute white glue.
Cons: Small barrel diameter on the spool makes the filament twistier than it should be.
The filament is pretty decent and definitely a good value. I had many successful prints using this filament.
Unfortunately, once you get through about a quarter of the spool, the small barrel diameter means the filament is turning too tight of a radius and doesn't straighten out when taken off the spool. On my printer, that's a problem. My preference would be for a spool with a much larger barrel diameter (6 inches or more) or for the filament to just come in a coil (no spool) with a diameter of at least one foot.
As it stands, I will need to remove this filament from the spool, coil it so it will (just) fit in my oven, and relax it. At that point, I'll be able to use the last of it up. Given the price, this isn't that big of a deal.

| | Spoke too soon | Pros: PLA at a great value
Cons: Inconsistent diameter over 3mm results in frequent hot end jams :(
When I first got my order of black and white PLA I ran a little of each to get a feel fro their performance. Both were excellent quality (far above the crap JET PLA I bound from Amazon). I decided to print with the black first. When I loaded the white, I kept getting jams. When I measured the diameter with my digital calipers, it was over 3mm. This makes it useless with my hot end and I'm past the 30-day return. I do plan to order more black and try some red, and figure out how I can salvage the white.
