Premium 3D Printer Filament PLA 1.75MM 1kg/spool, Black
Get outstanding 3D printing results when you use 1.75mm PLA 3D Printer Filament from Monoprice!
PLA is a good choice for a printing material if you are looking for high accuracy and high resolution. It extrudes at lower temperatures, does not require a heated base, and has a very low shrinkage rate (0.3%). PLA is harder than ABS, but is therefore also a bit more brittle. Additionally, PLA is a plant-based plastic, which means that it is biodegradable and gives off a slightly sweet odor, like roasting corn.
This 1 Kg spool features a thickness of 1.75mm ±0.10mm, with a roundness variation of only 0.03mm. It has a nominal processing temperature of 210° C (410°F). Thickness and roundness factors are laser measured at the factory to ensure accuracy over the entire length of the filament.
The negatives of using PLA is that it is vulnerable to degradation from moisture, sunlight, and heat. Additionally, it is more prone to overheating during processing, which can cause dripping and drooping if it gets too hot.

| | Filament shape and diameter are not super consistent | Pros: Pliable - not as brittle as some PLA, so doesn't break easily Inexpensive
Cons: Shape of filament varies, which breaks builds when the feeder mechanism can't engage filament
On my first use, everything started out well, but I came back to my printer furiously printing in mid-air with no filament being extruded. Unloading the filament, I found the strand had come to a portion where the gauge had varied enough that the gear mechanism that pulls the filament in could not grab the filament. Where the gears grab the filament it causes the little indents. But then when it came to the big dent in the filament there was nothing to grab. This has only happened once I have had a successful build since then. With any luck it's the only defect I'll find but since it was my first use I'm suspect.

| | So far so good | Pros: working great
Cons: none
I've used about 1/4 of this roll and it has worked perfectly in the Monoprice i3 printer - with the spool mounted above the print head. I haven't noticed any problems, there have been no jams, and no obvious contaminants.

| | Unmanageably Inconsistent | Pros: Layer bonding is great. Adheres to the printbed easily, especially with a slightly heated bed - little to no apparent warping.
Cons: Filament diameter varies quite widely (between 1.63 and 1.87 in my case) and is alternately very soft or brittle at points, leading to repeat failures when the feed gets gummed up or clogged or the feed off the spool cracks.
This filament is inexpensive, and handles like an inexpensive filament. I have not yet had even a single successful print, despite more than a dozen attempts and tweaking of settings. Every print failed within less than an hour. Every print failed because the extrusion simply stopped - the extruder got clogged, a soft spot in the filament got stripped during the feed, or the filament simply snapped.
Needless to say, I'm quite disappointed that I paid for a kilogram of seemingly useless filament. Maybe it'll work in another printer if I get a different one someday. Maybe I just got a dud and the inconsistencies aren't usually as bad as I've experienced. But of course, based on what it's been like for me I must advise against buying this product.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Nate,

| | Poorly Spooled | Pros: Decent quality prints for the price.
Cons: Filament snags coming off the spool.
I've printed a few items with this filament so far, using about 1/4 of the spool and most of the prints have come out well. The issue I have been experiencing is that the filament will sometimes snag on the spool underneath other layers of the roll. Sometimes this snag is just for a moment and pops off on it's own, but I have had 10-15 occurrences that required intervention to correct. Unattended printing isn't an option with this filament since a couple 6-8 hour prints were ruined 3/4 of the way through when my printer pulled the spool stand over, due to a snag in the filament. I can only use this filament for shorter prints, while I am working in close proximity to the printer. If I notice the snag occurring, some forceful pulling and rewinding will sort the issue out. I've only used one other PLA filament, and I did not experience this issue.

| | Works like a charm | Pros: Prints great
Consistent as far as I can tell
PRICE is SO GOOD
Cons: None
Monoprice's Premium 3D Printer Filament PLA 1.75MM 1kg/spool, Black, is a fantastic product. This PLA delivers great prints, and has lasted for weeks, still with no end in sight. I have just been using the one that came with Monoprice's 3D Printer, which I bought in December 2014, and I have been honestly impressed with the quality of the prints it is giving me. I especially like that PLA is environmentally friendly, being compostable/biodegradable. I will absolutely continue getting PLA from Monoprice. Granted, I am new to 3D printing, but this stuff is consistently perfect for the art and things I have been printing. I actually just received some Flexible PLA (PID12303) today, and I can't wait to try it out and review it. Definitely want to get my hands on more PLA, in grey and glow-in-the-dark, and especially the dissolvable HIPS (12301) for easy-to-remove support. Thanks Monoprice!
