5.8Ghz Wireless Audio/Video Transmitter
Add wireless flexibility to your home audio and video system with this 5.8GHz Wireless Audio/Video Transmitter from Monoprice!
This wireless transmitter allows you to wirelessly extend the signals from your VCR, satellite receiver, or camcorder using composite and S-Video cables. It operates on the 5.8GHz wireless frequency band, which is less crowded and has less interference than the traditional 2.4GHz wireless frequency. The unit allows you to select between four different RF channel frequencies for the transmission as well as two different IR remote frequencies.
The transmitter has an IR extender so you can control your source devices by simply pointing your remote at the transmitter. The package includes both the transmitter and receiver unit, 2 AC adapters, an IR transmitter bulb, and a set of RCA Composite cables. An S-video cable can be used instead of the yellow composite video cable when applicable.
The antennas of the transmitter and receiver can be rotated in order to point directly towards each other. The system's maximum range depends on the presence of obstructions. With clear line-of-sight it can achieve distances up to 200 feet! Inside homes, the effective range is normally reduced to approximately 75 feet.

| | They do well for what they are | Pros: Easy to install. Inexpensive
Cons: Non HD picture quality
Please keep in mind that they transmit non hd, and in this day and age, you can really tell the difference. Regardless, they perform very well for sending a picture 100 ft away (and through walls). Great for the price

| | Works great and very hackable (in a GOOD way!) | Pros: Works reliably Looks and sounds good
Cons: It's SD video, of course, but currently there is no inexpensive 1080p wireless video standard. Most 5.8gHz devices (including these) will have static bursts if you walk between the transmitter/receiver
I used a pair of these at work, mostly for audio, and they worked fine. (5.8gHz will not penetrate obstacles well, so plan accordingly.) The audio signal-to-noise ratio is not as good as a digital link, but for pop music or TV it will sound 100% fine. Outdoors I got a reliable stereo audio signal up to about 300ft line-of-sight! (Didn't test video at those distances.)
I needed a robust analog audio link for a custom project so I opened these up to harvest their transmitter/receiver modules (SM206TL and SM206R respectively). These modules were used in popular model aircraft FPV systems and they are great low-power links. (They require 5v and the transmitter draws about 120mA). I added an external antenna jack and a 5.8gHz helical antenna and now I get perfect transmission over at least 500 feet as long as the antenna are carefully aimed. There are fewer and less severe dropouts when obstacles like bodies block the line of sight too. (I'm a licensed HAM radio operator. Without a license you shouldn't really upgrade the antennas, but it's good to know you can extract the little TX/RX modules and use them for smaller projects.

| | Noise problem | Pros: Works...with noise
Cons: Not working well for my subwoofer because of white noise / hum when not transmitting audio.
The link works in a 20x20 room. I have it connecting from a Marantz 5010 AVR to a Klipsch subwoofer. The sub has a low pitched rumbling, I am guessing from interference. The units have direct line of sight, I have tried all the channels, turning off all the wifi in my house, and closing the antennae. No luck so far. It sounds like I have a second air condition.

| | A simple and effective way to transmit basic audio and video | Pros: Very easy to set up if you have basic AV experience.
Avoids pulling wires to a compromised location, at least in my case.
Cons: If you are addicted to HD-quality video, you are going to be disappointed.
I wish there was a version for RGB video, not just S-video.
I have a Bell 9242 two-tuner satellite receiver and DVR and I wanted to use the second tuner in another bedroom about 20 feet away. Normally I would have pulled coax through a crawl space between the rooms, but the TV location in the second bedroom would have forced me to snake coax around doorjambs, etc. Given that I was going to use this on a 19" LCD TV, I chose this product instead. Setup was quick and easy and it worked on the first try, and the aiming is rather forgiving at short distances. Yes, there is some ghosting and artifacts, but I am prepared to live with it. This is the cheapest, simplest solution so get this done. Note that I am using the composite video connection, since the Bell 9242 does not have S-video out for the second tuner.

Cons: Loud static pops if someone walked in between the line of sight. made this unusable for my situation
