Mini DisplayPort 1.1 Video + S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio to HDMI® Converter

Connect your mini DisplayPort and Toslink equipped MacBook®, laptop, or PC to an HDMI® display using this Mini DisplayPort Video + S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio to HDMI® Converter from Monoprice.

This adapter combines the mini DisplayPort video signal and the Digital Optical (Toslink) audio signal from the 3.5mm digital audio output into an HDMI audio/video signal. The adapter supports resolutions up to 1920x1080p, up to 36-bit Deep Color (12-bits per channel), and high-definition, multichannel audio, including DTS-HD Master Audio™ and Dolby TrueHD™. The adapter is powered using an available USB port. Note that this is not bidirectional and therefore will NOT convert HDMI video to mini DisplayPort.

    • 28" cable length
    • Supports resolutions up to 1920x1080p
    • Supports up to 12-bit per channel (36-bit total) Deep Color
    • Support uncompressed 2-channel and 5.1-channel LPCM audio
    • Supports compressed 5.1-channel audio, such as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD

Note for Mac® Mini users using dual monitors: There is an unresolved issue with using both the mini-DVI and Mini DisplayPort video outputs at the same time. When the mini-DVI cable is disconnected, the Mini DisplayPort output ceases to function, causing the display to show an "unsupported format" error. The solution is to use the mini-DVI output for the main display and the Mini DisplayPort output for the secondary display.

Pros: moonrise seems to try hard to resolve my issues, give them a 10 for customer service

Cons: just got a replacement unit form monoprice, it does the same thing as the first unit i had - unit goes on an off intermittently.

not so good, can't rely on this product...

Pros: Everything needed for non HDMI equipped macbooks to display on TV monitors..

Cons: Lacks informative instructions and data.

Note for existing and future purchasers: Before going into a panic and blowing your top after connecting to your Mac and only getting only audio, be sure to check your mac's display settings for the proper output. Mac default setting may be at 1080p, at least mine was. The monitor I was connecting to only displays 1080i ! If Mac output is incorrectly get audio only ! So before you give up and ship it back thinking it doesn't work check your display outputs...just a heads up..

Pros: - Reasonable cost (replacing an another version from a different brand which was 3x price)
    - Allows my old Mac mini to act as a HTPC

I bought this to replace a dead Kanex adapter, and so far so good! Video and sound seems to work (minor under-scan on video, but still trying to adjust settings), and the cost was 1/3 of the Kanex. I like that it also came with the TOSlink cable.

    Pros: None

    Cons: Doesn't work

Purchased this several years ago as a back up to the Inveo brand adapter I was using. Tried hooking this up today and only receive a blink of a red light as I'm inserting the usb to the Mac Mini. I'm using a 1m hdmi cable and also tried plugging the usb into a powered usb hub. Disappointed.

The good and the bad ...

Pros: If you get a good one, it works great!

Cons: Unreliable, hard to get a good one.

I purchased my first one of these in January of 2013. Within a few weeks, it started going bad - seemed to be heat related. Red indicator would shut off after a few minutes of operation, and video output would shut off. Let it cool off, and it would work again for a short time. I got a replacement from Monoprice and it has worked well until just recently when it died.

I purchased a new one from Monoprice, and it did the same as the first one. I'm in the process of returning it now for a replacement. Based on my own experience and comments from other reviewers on a variety of sites, it seems like there are a lot of "bad" units being shipped.

On the good side, Monoprice has VERY good, helpful customer support and will replace these units including shipping in both directions. I intend to keep trying till I get a good one because I do like what it does when it works.

I have an older Mac mini that I'm using as an audio/video source for my home theater, and it needs this adapter if I want to get surround sound output. A regular video adapter does not provide audio to the HDMI cable so you would need to go a separate route for audio. The Mac mini supplies digital audio, with 5.1 audio, to the optical coupler which is embedded in its headphone jack. This Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter comes with a special optical cable to plug into the Mac Mini's headphone jack, and it routes the 5.1 audio to the HDMI cable and allows the home theatre to then decode it to the surround sound audio system.

I've looked around and as far as I can tell, this adapter is the only game in town for this particular application. If I want 5.1 audio from my Mac mini, routed along with video in the same HDMI cable, there doesn't seem to be another option. And when it works, it works very well. The video and audio output are excellent!
