Pros: Inexpensive, fairly easy to assemble

Cons: Poor stress relief that eventually causes cable faults, too big of diameter on plug

I used to think these plugs were great, so I made dozens of cables with them. Down the road I had cables failing under phantom power. After disassembling, I found the XLR cabling looked shredded inside and nearly every wire was touching! The connector has poor stress relief and over time causes internal problems. But the biggest issue is that the diameter of these connectors is SLIGHTLY bigger than most and requires more force to plug in sometimes. I didn't think this was an issue, until I plugged it into a $200 audio recorder several months ago and have NOT been able to remove the connector. It's stuck and will not release the locking mechanism because the connector is oversized. Now I get to carry the recorder everywhere with a 15ft XLR cable attached. Will never buy these again, and will go with the "name" brand for actually the same price now. Will be replacing all the XLR cables on our stage made with these.

Pros: Fits well over cable. Nice and snug but not too tight.

Used for a new mic in the stadium sound booth. The connector is well made and easy to solder. The new mic sounds good.

    Pros: price. performance.

Cons: the little holes where you slide the wire through are quite small.

I have used a bunch of these and also the TRS and FXLR counterparts recently to wire up my modest home-recording set-up. I love these. And even though the holes where you slide the wires through are pretty small, any cursing I do is, I feel, mostly due to my own inexperience, haste, and foolishness. I just get really excited when I'm soldering...

Good Connector, but slightly out of spec

Pros: Solid construction, good looking finish, and a dream to solder to.

Cons: These connectors fit SNUG, as in difficult to disconnect snug.

I've used Monoprice's connectors for a while now, and so far I've had very few complaints about how they perform. The connectors look great, feel great, and are a dream to solder to. There's certainly no audible comparisons to be made vs Neutrik or other connectors on the market: they do what they're intended to do. My only complaint about Monoprice's male xlr connectors (this problem does not exist with the female or TRS/TS connectors) is that they fit extremely tight when plugging in. I've actually had the fear that I couldn't remove the connector out of a mic panel the other day. So far I've had to "break in" each connector by leaving it connected to a female wall connector just to get the pins to start lining up properly.

Overall the connector does it's job and feels and looks great while doing it. But if you have the type of clients who "hear with their eyes" or have their opinions swayed by the logo they see on your gear, you may want to look to Neutrik or some other brand. It will look especially bad if they see you pulling on the mic cable with all your might and it doesn't come out of the wall.
