5-inch Powered Studio Monitor Speakers (pair)

Every studio, be it a professional recording studio or just a home studio, needs a good set of monitor speakers, with a flat frequency response so you can hear exactly what the recording will sound like. If this describes your own needs, then you should get a pair of these 5-inch Powered Studio Monitor Speakers from Monoprice!

These speakers are professional quality studio monitors, designed to produce a flat frequency response for studio recording, mixing, and mastering duties. Each speaker is separately powered, is bi-amped with two dedicated amplifiers, and uses both balanced XLR and balanced/unbalanced TRS/TS audio input paths.

The tweeter is a 1" silk dome design with magnetic shielding for a flat frequency response and accurate musical reproduction. The woofer is a 5" DuPont™ Kevlar® fiber cone with magnetic shielding, rubber surround, and a high-temperature voice coil, for long hours of high volume work.

Each monitor enclosure includes two separate power amplifiers totaling 70 watts of music power. A 30 watt amplifier is used to drive the tweeter, while a 40 watt amp drives the woofer. This use of dual amplifiers ensures that each driver has the power it needs without compromising the output of the other driver, ensuring that the audio output remains crisp, clean, loud, and distortion free at all times.

A four-position selector switch on the back of each speaker allows you to adjust the high-frequency bias, with either a -2dB, -1dB, Flat, or +1dB shelving of frequencies above 2000 Hz. The purpose of this circuitry is to adjust the high-frequency response to the characteristics of the room being used. In a "bright" musical environment, an attenuation of the high frequencies is needed to produce a flat frequency response, while a more sound absorbent environment may require a boost of the high-frequencies to achieve a flat overall response.

Nice compliment to 10" sub woofer, well built

Pros: Great matchup with the Monoprice 10" subwoofer.
    Well built.

I replaced my old (10 years) M-Audio BX8A pair with these monitors, along with the Monoprice 10" subwoofer. Was definitely worth the investment. At half the price of the new M-Audio 'Carbon' version of this model, I can invest in other audio tools, most likely through Monoprice. :-)

These monitors have more than proved their worth!

Pros: Sound quality, build quality, price.

    Cons: None

I recently purchased these monitors and paired them with the 10" studio subwoofer, and could not be more pleased. At first I didn't think it would be possible for this setup to rival monitors double or triple their price, but they more than do the job. Sound quality and frequency response is great, and I believe their no-frills aesthetic works great. Overall, buying these speakers have won me over and I am now a firm believer in the Monoprice brand.

    Outstanding Sound Quality and Value

Pros: Pros: Great value, excellent clarity, excellent workmanship and build quality (so far). I'm using TRS cabling from the main outs on the mixerno hum whatsoever.

I have these set up as part of a personal studio. For mixing, I am using an Alesis 8 channel stereo mixer with usb, and feeding these powered studio monitors. I picked them up on sale, along with a $20 off coupon. So the value is even more outstanding. Nice sound, small footprint, excellent clarity and volume. I also use the setup for transcribing tunesI have an iPod patched in to the mix, and the sound is very good (even for compressed audio). Very Impressed!

A Lot of Bang Per Buck

Pros: Very good quality at a remarkable price.

Cons: If they can pass the test of time, NONE.

I've been using a pair of Tannoy PBM 6.5 monitors for many years. I bought them new so, yeah, that long. Recently the power amp driving the Tannoys went belly up and I saw that these were on sale. Since a replacement power amp would have cost me more than a pair of these powered monitors and they were getting great reviews, I thought I would give them a shot.

I have only had them for a little more than a week now but have them setup for K-20 projects.

I set the volumes on the back of the monitors to just under half and then boosted the control room out of my mixer outputting a -20 dBFS pink noise signal from my DAW until I got 83 dB for the left channel on my SPL meter at the center of my equilateral triangle. I then did the right channel and made a slight change to the volume on the back of that monitor until it too read 83 dB. I then worked out the compensation of room EQ using REW and a reference mic and rechecked the K-20 settings.

After doing all this and listening to my mixes that were done with the Tannoys I must say that I am quite pleased with these monitors. They are different but in a good way IMO but a bit less on the low end (but just a bit). It would be hard for me to put into words the difference between these and the Tannoys - only to say that I am glad I gave these a try.

We'll see how new mixes sound on real world sound systems when I get that far but everything seems to point to them working out just fine.

Whether they have the longevity of the Tannoys remain to be seem but they (at least outwardly) appear to be a well built quality product and if they last a quarter as long they are well worth the money.

In about a year, if they have proven thier stuff, I just might get a pair of the Monoprice 8" monitors and A-B them on mixes.

BTW, I am only a long time home recording enthusiast producing my own music as well as for a few friends and not a professional so, YMMV.

    OUTSTANDING VALUE

Pros: Input control on the back of the speakers.

THESE OF BEEN A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO MY SYSTEM. I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL BUT I AM A MUSIC ENTHUSIAST THE DEMANDS OF ACCURATE REPRODUCTION. My system feeds the speakers from a Behringer Xenyx Control 1, along with two other sets of reference monitors also made by Behringer. The Mono price monitors perform in a way that allows me to match them with my system. As far as I'm concerned that is quite a compliment.
