5-inch Powered Studio Monitor Speakers (pair)

Every studio, be it a professional recording studio or just a home studio, needs a good set of monitor speakers, with a flat frequency response so you can hear exactly what the recording will sound like. If this describes your own needs, then you should get a pair of these 5-inch Powered Studio Monitor Speakers from Monoprice!

These speakers are professional quality studio monitors, designed to produce a flat frequency response for studio recording, mixing, and mastering duties. Each speaker is separately powered, is bi-amped with two dedicated amplifiers, and uses both balanced XLR and balanced/unbalanced TRS/TS audio input paths.

The tweeter is a 1" silk dome design with magnetic shielding for a flat frequency response and accurate musical reproduction. The woofer is a 5" Kevlar cone with magnetic shielding, rubber surround, and a high-temperature voice coil, for long hours of high volume work.

Each monitor enclosure includes two separate power amplifiers totaling 70 watts of music power. A 30 watt amplifier is used to drive the tweeter, while a 40 watt amp drives the woofer. This use of dual amplifiers ensures that each driver has the power it needs without compromising the output of the other driver, ensuring that the audio output remains crisp, clean, loud, and distortion free at all times.

A four-position selector switch on the back of each speaker allows you to adjust the high-frequency bias, with either a -2dB, -1dB, Flat, or +1dB shelving of frequencies above 2000 Hz. The purpose of this circuitry is to adjust the high-frequency response to the characteristics of the room being used. In a "bright" musical environment, an attenuation of the high frequencies is needed to produce a flat frequency response, while a more sound absorbent environment may require a boost of the high-frequencies to achieve a flat overall response.

    Pros: Great Audio Reproduction.
    These Look Great.
Very Durable Back Plate & Jacks.
Nice Heavy Build So These Will Not Vibrate Off A Surface.

Cons: You Will Come To Find You've Been Listening To Modified Versions Of Music All Your Life.
You Will Desire Unmodified Music & Start Noticing How Every One Else Is Happy With Awful Audio Reproduction.
I Honestly Can't Find Any Cons With These Studio Monitors, They Will Bring A New Awareness Of Audio Quality.
Some May Not Like The Bright Blue LED's, I Like Them Because I Know When These Studio Monitors Are On.

What Can I Say Other Than These Studio Monitors Exceeded My Expectations. There Is Absolutely No Indication That These Are Powered On Besides The Blue LED's, They Are That Clean. Remember To Break Them In, All That Took In My Case Is Leaving Them On Over Night With No Audio Running Into Them. Peace!

Pros: Excellent sound. Great Power. Great Lows and Highs.

Cons: Only one con. Does not have RCA plug.

The dedicated amps really make a difference. Good bass and crisp clear treble. These are really worth the money. Forget about all those computer speakers that are made for your computer these are better. I have them plugged into a small laptop and I play music videos from You Tube and the performance is fantastic. Better that those $400 Bose any day. You can just set the volume at the speakers and then adjust it from the source. These are definitely one of the best audio purchases I have ever made.

Pros: Powerful with incredible sound separation

Cons: Separate power switches on rear can be awkward to access
(but a dedicated power bar solves this easily)

I AM NOT AN AUDIOPHILE however I am a former percussionist, a former sound technician, a home theater enthusiast, and a lover of truly _great_ music from every genre. Over the years I've been fortunate to have been exposed to a lot of excellent gear and live musicians in a variety of professional, semi-professional and home contexts. In the past couple of years I've bought two "highly rated" consumer-grade computer speakers, paying $100 and $150 (I won't mention brands, but you've heard of them). Both sets were okay, but honestly in both cases I felt let down with the very first track I ran through them. Adequate volume, but just no punch or presence. Finally I decided to take a risk and spend a few more bucks for these Monoprice monitors (approx $200 with the two 15' XLR-to-RCA cables). As soon as I played a track, I knew I'd found what I'd been looking for! In fact right now I am listening to some U2, with the monitor volume at 50%, and source volume at 50%, and they are beautifully filling my 16' x 12' office. I don't mean they are merely loud (though I'm just waiting for my wife to ask me to turn it down!) ... what I mean is that I can finally hear the separation of every instrument, harmony breath, string and brush stroke. I can't stop listening! Amazing. Finally.

Pros: Worked for about 3 days

Cons: Worked for about 3 days

Really sad about this one. I've had nothing but good experiences with Monoprice in the past. In fact it's probably the only company I've ever actually referred people to (and a lot of times). So this one bugs me.

I bought these 2 years ago for a studio I've been building. They sat in their original box, in a temperature controlled room, with nothing stacked on top of them. I finally finished my studio and set them up. for the first few days they worked pretty darn well. Then all of a sudden one of the speakers started crackling all the time. even with no audio plugged into it, it crackled. The volume wasn't up high, so I know they weren't blown...one is still fine, but the other is a constant irritant now. If you need monitors, you might as well spend the extra money to get a good quality pair, because these are not.

    5 inch Monitor Speakers

    Pros: Price, performance, design

    Cons: None so far

I purchased these monitors after quite a bit of research into speakers around this price point. While not an audio professional or true audiophile, I have had the good fortune of being exposed to some very high end audio over the years. These speakers deliver a great clean sound you would expect from monitors of this size.

The build quality is quite nice, fit and finish is clean. They are quite heavy and have a very solid feel. The cabinet appears to be well made, corners are sharp, the mountings look well done. Nothing is crooked or haphazard. While some have objected, I find the bright blue power led attractive. Overall, the speaker is a good discrete looking speaker. I use them as a hobbyist DJ, and have them in our formal dining room where i mix. No complaints from the wife as they look as at place in that location as any speaker of this size could.

Sound: I don't know all the current audiophile jargon, so I'll just say they sound great. Highs, miss, and lows are all produced with no perceptible issues. They sound as good as the source, so take that into consideration. As has been noted in previous reviews, monitors merely reproduce the signal without adding any hi-if resonance. And these do that very well. One concern was bass reproduction, and these are quite adequate in that regard. Mounted at ear level, about 2 feet from where I sit may not be ideal, but it sounds great so far. I have placed a thin sheet of neoprene under each, although they sounded fine before I put that there.

Technical: plenty of connection options, and you can tailor the highs to the environment. One thing I would like to have would be RCA inputs, but really the XLR is a better input and more common Iin a professional environment. Other well known brand speakers like these have a bass adjustment as well, but those are generally over double the price and I haven't detected a need to boost the bass response. It's not boomy, but they punch good sound I can feel. I work with EDM and house mostly, so it's something I want to hear and feel a bit without overpowering the highs and mids. These do that really nicely.

Overall, I haven't had them long, so I can't speak to years of reliable use. (They do have replaceable fuses so that could be a plus.) I've recommended these to friends and would to anyone who is looking for very good sound at a good value.

BTW, I have them connected to the speakers with Monoprice 10 foot RCA to XLR cables. No issues going from the unbalanced Pioneer DDJ outputs to the balanced XLR inputs. No noise or grounding, etc.
