8-Channel Audio Mixer with USB

Whether it is for a recording or a performance, a good mixer should be a part of every musician's toolbox. However, mixers can be expensive, but that was before Monoprice got into the Pro Audio business!

This 8-channel mixer features a full suite of input options, including four balanced XLR microphone inputs, four unbalanced mono 1/4" TS line inputs, two pairs of unbalanced mono 1/4" TS inputs ganged together for stereo control, a single USB 2.0 input/output for connection to a computer, a 3.5mm stereo TRS input, and a pair of RCA inputs. The mixer can provide +48V Phantom Power to all four XLR mic inputs.

In addition to the USB 2.0 input/output, this mixer has five additional outputs. The Phones output is an unbalanced stereo 1/4" TRS connection, while the Aux Send and the R and L outputs are all unbalanced mono 1/4" TS connections. Additionally, there is a pair of RCA outputs. The R and L outputs are ganged together for stereo control on the mixer.

A Bit Frustrated, However Great Product

Pros: -Supposed "buzzing" by other reviewers is not present (Maybe was fixed finally?)
-Allows for a plethora of different options of audio input finding the levels and sound you want
-Very dynamic piece of hardware

Cons: -Recorded audio quality sounds much lower when played back from laptop in contrast to how it sounds when headphones plugged directly into device (?)
-Doesn't record in separate audio tracks in Audacity Audio Program

Here's the thing: I'm not rating a 10 because it's not a perfect interface and I didn't rate 9 because I'm unsure if the con I'm experiencing is due to the product itself or not. I got my laptop today (final piece of home-recording studio) and I was a little disappointed at the results of my recording. I was super hyped to be able to finally record music with crystal-clear audio (as evident by plugging in my headphones directly to the mixer and hearing immediate reception of my voice through the mics). However, after testing the audio in recording to my laptop, I discovered that A) it did not record the two microphones in separate audio tracks and B) the recorded audio did not sound nearly as clear as it did through the headphones. I know that this machine must be capable of producing the clarity I'm hearing the my headphones because it is all working through the machine, but I am frustrated as to why the recorded result is on par as if I had recorded with my phone. I am also frustrated with the fact that the audio tracks aren't separated, but to a much lesser extent (I could record music happy with this still in effect). Now I am not sure if this lack of good quality is due to the program, the product, or something else, but as I could not find any solution as the what the issue is at all, I can only assume it has something to do with the machine because it's absolutely not a professional product, however it has potential to do its job well. If I figure out this issue (I'm hoping maybe a Monoprice rep could help me figure it out because I can't find squat anywhere else on the Internet) then this product would make my year and gladly recommend it. Until then, a little frustrated and yearning to record music of a high audio quality. After all, the purpose of me spending a total of $200 of audio equipment at Monoprice was for me to be able to record much higher audio quality. Please help!

I apologize for the delayed response. I looked into this further with another tech and have found that while this mixer has a power supply, it would be considered a passive mixer due to the low power input requirements. Unfortunately, passive mixers output a lower powered signal which can cause the issues you are referencing such as the lower volume and lack of detail. You can try recording via a different connection type (instead of USB) to see if the output improves. However, for a louder, fuller sound, an active mixer would work best. The main drawback of using a powered mixer is that the price is significantly higher. For example, here is a link to our Powered Mixers category:

If unsatisfied with the mixer, I can assist you in setting up an RMA for a refund. If you would like to proceed, please let me know and I will get that going right away. I am truly sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you very much for your patience.

Hum? Not hearing it

Pros: Great build, looks good, lots of mixing options, lots of inputs, USB out

Cons: None.

I'm not having any issues with hum. I'm running Windows 7 and using the Singer/Songwriter mic kit that's available here on Monoprice. Not hearing any hum when running through Audacity or TeamSpeak. Haven't tried it with my Maschine or MIDI keyboard plugged in yet though. Had issues with Windows assigning the audio output to the mixer as well as the input but that was a one-click fix in Windows. Can't say I've got any complaints about this. It's nothing more than a basement/bedroom mixer (maybe could be used for small live performances? Probably great for a DJ. Beats a four-track recorder.) but for the price I'm ecstatic. I was worried about the hum issues but haven't heard a bit of it and I'm using exclusively USB input at this point (I'll try to update when that changes if hum is an issue).

Pros: cheap...for good reason

Cons: No MIDI
USB creates unusable hum

Do not buy this mixer. i wish i hadnt.
IMHO they should recall these based on the reviews. seems like these shortcomings are common.
in general, i feel sorta ripped off on this. it just doesnt do what it says it does...and that is sad.

Thank you for your feedback on PID 615808. My apologies for the inconvenient experience you have faced while using this mixer. If possible, can we try a few troubleshooting steps to see if we can isolate what the issue may be? If using a laptop, please unplug the power supply and run on battery power as that may get rid of the hum. If that doesn't make any difference or if using a desktop, disconnect all devices (router, printer, etc.) from the computer except for the audio interface and speakers and test the mixer again. If the hum is still present, please try disconnecting the USB cable from the mixer and listening via the headphone out instead. Should the hum persist, please let me know along with your order number so we can best assist you. Truly sorry again for the trouble and I hope this helps!

The Hum That Ruined a Good Product

  • Keir,

Pros: Good tactile response from levels, solid built casing, firm inputs and good contact points

Cons: A frequency hum that makes this unit useless.

The unaddressed, unresolved 1khz hum issue from the USB output (most noticeable on Mac recording) has been too well documented to trouble anyone with reading yet another "me too!" review. Suffice to say that of all the hundreds upon thousands of dollars I've spent with Monoprice over the years, this is the most disappointing purchase I've ever made, and there have been no efforts from their team to acknowledge, repair, replace or credit the dozens of purchasers who have gone to such extraordinary lengths to correct or work around the problem on their own.

Sorry, guys, this one's a dud. Fix it, refund it, or take it off the catalog.

Hello Keir,

Thank you for your review and truly sorry to hear about the experience you have had with PID 615808. If I may ask, is the mixer connected to a laptop or desktop? Can we try disconnecting all devices (such as printers, network, audio cables, etc.) from the computer except for the audio interface and speakers to see if the hum is still present? Should that not work, can we try disconnecting the USB cable and listening to the mixer via the headphone out instead just to further isolate what the issue may be? Also, do you happen to have the order number for this purchase? My apologies again for the trouble and thank you in advance!

Worth Every Penny

Pros: Excellent options for the money
4 mic inputs
Multiple inputs for any device
separate gains for all mics

Cons: none based on what I need it for

I think this board is outstanding for the price. I use it with my DJ setup and it works flawlessly. Very clean signal, high quality parts, and everything you need. I would have loved to see an effect or two for the vocals, but hey, for this price I'm just getting greedy. I don't use the USB, so I can't comment on that. I plug in my laptop, and run it from the board to my amp. Exceptionally simple set up, and it works flawlessly. Three thumbs up!
