Route 66 Modern Solid Body Electric Guitar - Vintage Sunburst

So what do you do if you have a successful product launch, like we've had with our Route 66 Vintage Solid Body Guitars? Well, if you're Monoprice you listen to customer feedback, make improvements, and release a new version that addresses those concerns. Enter the new Route 66 Modern Solid Body Electric Guitar from Monoprice!

The most obvious change is that we've eliminated the plastic pick guard and the plastic label around the pickup select switch. This allows you to see all of the beautiful finish of your choice, without being obscured by the plastic bits. In a bid to modern styling, we've sharpened the horn below the cutaway, giving an "edgier" look to the guitar body.

One of the standard complaints about the Vintage version was the quality of the strings. Not only have we increased the gauge from 0.009 to 0.010 inch on the high E string, but we are now using our coated strings, for increased durability as well as sonic excellence.

Finally, we adjusted the orientation of the volume and tone knobs. The entire knob assembly was rotated 90° counterclockwise so that the orientation of the knobs corresponds to the orientation and location of the pickups. So the neck pickup, which is on your left when wearing the guitar, is controlled by the leftmost knobs, while the bridge pickup (on the right) is controlled by the rightmost knobs.

The rest of the guitar remains the same as the Route 66 Vintage model. It is a full-sized, 22-fret guitar with a basswood archtop single-cutaway body, a bolt-on maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and chrome machine heads/tuning pegs. It uses two dual-coil humbuckers, which produce the distinctive sound used in southern rock, heavy metal, electric blues, reggae, and classic hard rock. A three-position switch on the body above the fingerboard allows you to easily select between the bridge and neck pups, or both together.

Before it gets shipped to you, each Monoprice guitar undergoes a setup, tuning, and inspection process by Master Luthier Roger Gresco here in Southern California. The setup ensures that the neck is straight, the action is right, and that it will stay in tune. Additionally, it comes with everything you need to get started, including strings (installed), a heavy-duty zippered black gig bag with shoulder strap, and a truss-rod wrench.

Looks great, feels nice, but man oh man the BUZZ

Pros: It looks good, it's nice and heavy. the pick-ups sound pretty alright.
This is a great guitar to buy if you want to discourage your kids from playing music.

Cons: BUZZZ! You just can't play any open string. Also, you can't play the first fret, second fret and third fret neither. If you play on the High "E" string and bend it ever-so-slightly, the string gets stuck on the edge of the frets and won't go back into place. So, it's a nice guitar to hang on your wall. Except, one of the tone knobs came off right away, so it won't look that nice on the wall.

I needed a cheap guitar for the house and the price for this was just right. This guitar feels nice, it has a good weight to it. The finish is really pretty. One big issue: Open, first, second and third frets are all dead frets. I just can't play any notes up on that part of the neck. I tried adjusting the action, but to no avail. I certainly ain't gonna spend a hundred dollars on setting up a hundred dollar guitar. Also, you can't play the high E string without it somehow getting stuck on the edge of the frets - the string will not go back to playing position, it just stays stuck in a bent position at the edge of the neck until you take a pick and slide it (from the neck pick-up) up the neck to wedge the string loose. If the frets worked and the string didn't get stuck, I'd say its almost as good as an Epi LP.

    Hello Hank,

Thank you for your review and truly sorry to hear about the issues experienced with PID 610213. Unfortunately, it appears as though you have received a defective guitar. If you would like, I can help setup an RMA for a replacement. We offer a one year warranty for our guitars and obtaining the replacement would be of no additional cost. If you wanted to proceed with the RMA, please provide the order number and I can get that started right away. My apologies again for any inconvenience and I hope this helps!

Awesome for the price, good base for upgrades

Pros: Very well made and set up-out of the box. Considering the price, plenty of room to upgrade components and still be well under the cost of an EPI, let alone an authentic LP

Cons: Slightly heavy compared to real Les Paul, but I only know this from a back-to-back comparison.

Fast shipping, received within a week and arrived undamaged and in tune. Got the vintage sunburst. Nicely finished, not much wood grain in basswood, but still a good looking guitar and amazing quality for the price. Body and neck precisely and solidly joined. All frets smoothly polished with no fret buzz or dead frets. Poor strings, replaced with Ernie Ball skinny top heavy bottom. Tuners, bridge, pickups, posts, everything works as they should. Nothing looks cheap, it looks like quality though I know they're not really. Nonetheless, good tone, though I will eventually replace all the hardware and electronics in building a Slash clone. It’s so well-made, I have no problem investing $400 or so in this.

Pros: Great price and nice sounding. Well set up afaik

Cons: ZERO, okay...bags are meh, but I'll buy good ones.

First off, I'm a professional drummer/singer for over 40 years.
I have been a guitar "owner' for many years but never have the time to actually sit down and learn it.
I recently bought a beautiful acoustic and found these Monoprice LP's and ordered one and a Strat as well.
They arrived today and other than tuning them up, they are great. I'm bring them both to our rehearsal studio tonight for my guitarists to play them for a final Okie Dokie. No flaws, yes bags are cheapo and one has a small rip on the bottom, but who cares ?
I'll add more after a few weeks.

Route 66 Modern Solid Body Electric Guitar - Vintage Sunburst

Pros: It is a good copy of the Gibson Les Paul at a low price.
Good action right out of the box.

Cons: I needed to put a new lighter set of strings
    I needed to do a new set-up

A very good guitar and copy of the more expensive one. I have not played in over 20 years due to other medical conditions and I enjoy picking up this guitar and playing one like I used to have way back from the 60's. Will be playing this one a long time.
Thank you Monoprice for a very good product.

Beautiful finish, set-up less than desirable

    Pros: Beautiful looking guitar.

    Cons: Unfortunate fret buzz.

I agree with the previous reviews that claim this appears to be a much more expensive instrument. The finish is flawless on the item I received. The toggle switch is pretty stiff and loud, but it may loosen up with use. The rest of the electronics sound great and I won't be replacing them any time soon if at all.

Unfortunately, the professional luthier that inspected this item missed the terrible fret buzz between the 3rd and 5th fret. The problem isn't with the neck bow but is from frets either not properly seated or finished so adjustments to the truss rod won't work.

All in all a great buy especially if you're willing to pony up a few extra bucks to have the deficiencies repaired.
