California Classic - Solid Body Electric Guitar - Red

You know it when you hear it. That distinctive California Classic sound made famous by artists like Dick Dale, David Gilmour, and Ritchie Blackmore. Whether it is the surf, blues, psychedelic rock, country, or classic hard rock, this California Classic Solid Body Electric Guitar from Monoprice is the perfect axe for your daily practice and performance needs.

This full-sized, 22-fret guitar features a double-cutaway body made of basswood, a bolt-on maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and chrome machine heads/tuning pegs. It uses three single-coil pickups in the bridge, middle, and neck positions. A five-position selector switch allows you to use each of the three pickups individually, while the 2 and 4 positions combine the neck and bridge pups with the middle one for that distinctive "quack" sound. A tremolo/whammy bar is included for note bending.

Before it gets shipped to you, each Monoprice guitar undergoes a setup, tuning, and inspection process by Master Luthier Roger Gresco here in Southern California. The setup ensures that the neck is straight, the action is right, and that it will stay in tune. Additionally, it comes with everything you need to get started, including strings (installed), the tremolo/whammy bar, a heavy-duty zippered black gig bag with shoulder strap, and a truss-rod wrench.

Pros: Sounds like a vintage strat.
Frets were level, with no protruding ends.

Cons: Nothing that couldn't be fixed easily.

I bought the red California Classic on sale for $69.99. It arrived well set up for a player who likes a floating bridge and very low action, but that ain't me, so I performed a full setup and fixed a few minor issues.

I am VERY happy with this instrument. For seventy bucks and about an hour of work, I got a great-sounding guitar.

Pros: Price! Can't beat it for the price.

    Cons: None so far

I agree with the person that said that the finish is "creamier" than the picture looked, but it does not detract from this being a great guitar. However, it sounds great and has been a blast to play so far.

You seriously cannot buy a better strat clone at 69$

    Pros: -price
-setup is OK out of box and quite playable
-frets are smooth, really greaat finish for price
-tuning is good , doesnt detune after one song like i'm used to in cheaper guitars.

Cons: -red is a bit ..... poppy red bright.

I'm an acoustic guitar player but I wanted a really really low cost strat clone for times i want to play electric / leads for my church worship band. I was skeptical of a "monoprice" branded guitar but a LOT of really favorable reviews out there on youtube convinced me to just try this. For 69$ you really cant go wrong. I was sufficiently blown away by this guitar. At this price, you cannot complain about anything. I really like how the newer guitars now have just an "M" monoprice logo on the tuning head , as opposed to "monoprice" written on the older ones. Intonation /setup was fairly OK. but i do think it needs some tweaking to get it setup to your liking - like, I would definitely not keep the strings that it comes with.... just a preference thing. Very minor intonation issue but easily fixable. This guitar sounds quite good - i think its a bit bright(?) but nothing some EQ cant fix. I would have loved to buy a black one but its 20$ more for some reason :)

Repairing uneven frets: Leveling frets using a sanding beam:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebC0U4BDKqE

15 minute video. Please, Please, PLEASE show this video to the people who are sanding and leveling the fretboard. Just 15 minutes and the people in the factory making these could improve the quality tenfold.

These are decent guitars. Plays well for the price I paid. Great starter guitar. Lots of fret buzz. Had to replace the cheap plastic nut with a graphite one to try and remedy some of the fret buzz. It helped a bit. Also, I think a heavier gauge string than regular/medium would help remove some of the fret buzz. The certificate from the luthier is cool, and it was set up very well out of the box, but the uneven frets negate the work of the luthier.
