    Thunder D3 Dual-bay Thunderbolt™ + USB 3.0 Enclosure -Silver

Add up to 4TB of ultrafast storage to your MacBook® or other Thunderbolt™ equipped computer using this RAID-capable Thunder D3 Dual-bay Thunderbolt + USB 3.0 Enclosure from Monoprice!

This aluminum dual-bay enclosure accepts two 2.5" SATA drives with a maximum capacity of 2TB each. It accepts both hard drives and SSDs, with maximum thickness from 9.5 ~ 15 mm. It supports drives using the SATA 1.5Gbps, 3.0Gbps, or 6.0Gbps (SATA I, II, and III) interfaces for maximum flexibility in drive selection.

This aluminum enclosure includes one Thunderbolt and one USB 3.0 port, for additional flexibility. Thunderbolt provides data transfer rates up to 10Gbps, which is more than 60% faster than the SATA III interface. USB 3.0 provides data transfer rates up to 5.0Gbps, which though slower than Thunderbolt, is still almost as fast as SATA III.

The enclosure treats each drive as a separate volume and is capable of working with RAID software (not included). It can draw all the power it needs from the Thunderbolt or USB connection, but an AC power adapter is also included so you don't have to rely on bus power. A USB 3.0 cable is also included.

    • Supports 2.5" HDD and SSD models using the SATA I, II, or III interface
    • Supports drives between 9.5 ~ 15 mm thick
    • Supports drives from 20GB ~ 2TB capacity (each)

    • Aluminum enclosure with built-in cooling fan (21.0 dBA noise level)
    • Includes both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports for maximum flexibility
    • Powered by Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 bus or using included AC adapter
    • Supports Mac® OS X® 10.7 or later
    • Supports Windows® 7 and Windows 8

Note that this enclosure does NOT support the Seagate Constellation 15mm drives.

Nice enclosure, works well with 2 SSDs

    Pros: Good price
    Supports both USB3 and Thunderbolt
Included a Thunderbolt cable, although not stated

Cons: Need power with 2 SSDs and cannot run on Thunderbolt alone
Fan cannot easily be turned off.

Bought this enclosure to upgrade SSD I use on my iMac to add a bigger primary drive. Installation of the drives was simple and screws provided worked well (unlike some prior reviewers). Only 2 minor issues first I needed to run power to the enclosure it would not run with just Thunderbolt connection, and second fan noise is very low, but there is no easy way to turn the fan off that I could find barring cutting the wires. as I am running 2 SSDs the fan is not necessary I don't think.

Pros: Small, Both USB3 & Thunderbolt, Quite, Fast.

Cons: Only one Thunderbolt port - no chaining.

I put two 512GB SSD drives in here, and formatted it on the Mac as soft RAID 0. I get 725MBs Read and 675MBs Writes. About 700MBs Thunderbolt and about 350MBs USB3. That's 1TB of very fast storage, which I use for video editing projects.

A Couple Of Things Off (Would Be A 10)

    Pros: Nice Size
    Fairly Quiet

Cons: Does not handle 15mm drive (though site says it does other than Seagate 15mm)
Does not work on Bus Power

I like the size of the unit, and it was quiet though I only set it up for a couple of minutes before breaking it down and RMAing it. Like the other reviewer, I found the screws were the wrong size (I tried a few different hard drives and brands. Mainly smaller (under 15mm) HGST, Crucial SSD, Samsung SSD. My 15mm non-Seagate also did not seem to fit (size and screws). Also it did not work via bus power either on Thunderbolt or USB 3.0.

Proper screw sizes, two 15mm drives and bus power make this a 10 Star. If you do not need bus power (I bought this specifically for that feature) add stars back. If you are good with the smaller 1.5 TB drives (form factor under 15mm), add stars back. If you have screws lying around, add stars back.

I will look again at this in the future. It seems to be a newer product and it could be just a hiccup in the run.

    Pros: - Small enclosure
    - Looks like a miniature mac pro desktop
    - Thunderbolt connection

Cons: - Hard drive screws are the wrong size
    - The trays that slide into the enclosure are a little janky.
    - Uses the smaller laptop sized hard drives

Been using this for about a week now and it seems to be working fine. I didn't realize that this was for the smaller laptop hard drives until I got it. Not a super big deal but laptop drives cost more than the standard hard drive.

The biggest issue is that this enclosure is shipped with hard drive screws that are too small to mount into the trays. So unless you have standard flush set hard drive screws sitting around you're going to have problems installing drives into this enclosure. I was lucky enough that my dad had some otherwise I was going to send this back. I contacted customer support and all they told me to do was send it back. Pretty poor recommendation in my opinion.

If they fix the screw situation I would have given this product 8-9 stars.

Thank you for your review. And I am truly sorry to hear of your experience you have had with this product. Can you please let me know what you mean that the hard drive screws are the wrong size? Most manufacturers provide the screws for the hard drive accordingly so the ones we supply will fit most but if yours has a different size, it will come with the hard drive in the box. Did you buy your hard drive separate or was it included with the computer? I hope this helps. Thank you!
