Tone Generator w/ Probe Kit

The Monoprice Pro LAN Tracer/Toner is a professional tool used to test and troubleshoot RJ11 cables and individual wires. It can be used to trace and identify individual wires or cables within a bundle or group and can perform continuity testing.

The tester is composed of two individual units: the Tone Generator and the Amplifier Probe with sensing tip. Each unit is constructed of plastic and is powered by a 9 volt battery. Two 9 volt alkaline batteries are included in the packaging.

The Tone Generator has a three position toggle switch, that turns the unit on in Tone or Continuity mode. A metal sheath around the switch prevents it from being accidentally turned on or off. A 3-color LED is used to indicate line polarity, continuity, and phone line condition. The Tone Generator unit has an attached pair of red and black leads with alligator clips, plus an RJ11 4-conductor wire and plug.

The Amplifier Probe has an adjustable volume control, a speaker, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. A recessed power/activation press-to-use button prevents the probe from being accidentally powered on or from draining the battery by being left on when not in use.

The Amplifier Probe is used to detect the presence of the tone sent by the Tone Generator on a wire. This can be used to detect continuity in a single wire and can test for breakage points along a wire's length. Additionally, it can be used to identify individual wires within a bundle.

RJ11 Connector doesn't work

Pros: Good toner, works well other than the rj11 connector (could just be a bad connection on mine)

Cons: RJ11 connector does not work.

Good low price toner and probe other than the rj11 connector which could just be an issue with my mine. Not as good as the Fluke analog and nowhere near as good as the Fluke Intelliprobe 200

Monoprice Tone and Probe industrial review

Pros: Works over long distances
Comes with a bag

Cons: No alternating tone, just has a single solid tone

After reading other reviews I was somewhat hesitant about getting this for work where I am a low voltage electrician, most reviews were on home used on sub-25 foot cables. Well the other day we pulled a 622 foot two conductor speaker cable in a hospital and I went ahead and tested out my new toner. It worked great, the wand picked up the tone very well on half volume at that distance, I have used Fluke toners that wouldn't even do that. Works great!

Works as expected

Pros: Did exactly what I had hoped it would and met expectations, worked well to help find speaker cable through my drywall in the living room.

Cons: Signal isn't strong enough to go through really dense material, but that's not a problem if you're just finding cables through drywall or similar thickness materials.

My house was pre-wired with speaker cables in the living room, which is awesome. Only bad part is, I was not aware of where the speaker wire was run to in the ceiling. Luckily, I knew the termination point of the bundle of speaker wires behind the entertainment center, and using this tool I was able to hook up the tone generator to each cable independently and trace the line through my walls and to the termination points in the ceiling. Once they were found I was able to successfully cut out a hole and install my in ceiling speakers. Worked great for the price and would happily recommend to others if you need to find a cable that's hidden in your drywall.

The signal tended to be pretty weak, so I'm assuming this wouldn't work well for finding cable through a more dense material, but it worked fine through drywall and a typical wood framed house.
