Multifunction RJ-45, BNC, and Speaker Wire Tone Generator | Tracer | Tester

The Monoprice 3-in-1 Tracer/Toner/Cable Tester is a professional tool used to test and troubleshoot RJ45, RJ11, and BNC cables. It can also be used to trace and identify individual wires within a wire bundle or group and can provide talk testing functionality between telephone units.

The tester is composed of two main units: the Tone Generator/Cable Tester and the Amplifier Probe with sensing tip. Each unit is constructed of plastic with the edges covered in rubber to improve grip. Each unit is powered by a 9 volt battery and two batteries are included in the packaging.

The Tone Generator/Cable Tester is the main testing unit and is used to test cable continuity for Coaxial cables, RJ45 and RJ11 cables, and for individual wires using the attached alligator clips. A detachable Remote Terminator is used for RJ45 and RJ11 cables to provide the continuity link at the remote end of the cable.

The Tone Generator portion of the tester is used to send a tone down an attached cable. The Amplifier Probe is then used at the other end to test individual cables in a bundle or group to find the one with the tone, thus identifying the cable. The Amplifier Probe can also be used at various points along a cable length to locate a break in the cable.

In Talk Batt mode, the tester provides the power and closes a telephone circuit to allow the phones to be tested for operation and the wires to be tested for continuity and clarity.

The tester has an auto-off functionality that kicks in after 20 seconds of non-use in all modes except the Toner and Talk Batt mode. These latter two modes will remain on without activity for 30 minutes before the tester automatically shuts down.

Awesome Product

Pros: Functional, Light Weight, Gets the job done.

Cons: Could be built a little better.

I recently purchased this product and it came in a timely manner. After installing the included batteries I tested the tracer function. As the new IT Manager for my company I have been trying to organize things that the previous manager did not take the time to do. With 3 locations I have 3 racks with 2 routers and 2 switches that I need to label. This product has made this daunting task a heck of a lot easier.

Stopped working after 14 months

Pros: The tone generator portion & tracer work well.

Cons: The RJ-45 tester stopped working after about 14 months of occasional use. It always shows a fault on the 5-6 pair. I bet I re-made 5 cables before realizing the tester was bad!

Definitely lower quality that I expect for the money. It seems durable, but after 14 months, the RJ45 tester is useless.

Horrible Toner

Pros: Most the features besides the one I wanted seemed to work but did not really spend much time testing.

Cons: Has a BNC connection so I bought to tone some RG6. I put a 6" piece of RG6 on it to be able to connect it to the wall jack and I could barely hear the tone at the end of that small piece. If you moved the product around sometimes it would get louder but would never stay that way. Tried plugging it into a run that was just over 10ft long and I could not hear the tone at the end.

I have spent thousands of dollars with monoprice at the company I am at and never have I been let down by a product like I was with this one.

Some Limitations

Pros: It's a great all around piece, very versatile and covers a lot of ground.

Cons: When checking network cables it checks in pairs, therefor if you have a reversed pair it won't show up as bad because it only checks continuity of the pairs, it will tell you if your crossed though.

Easy to use, no issues tracing RJ45 cables.

Pros: Easy to use I and was able to trace and test multiple RJ45 cables that were installed in walls with runs varying from 30 to 100 '

Cons: Tone can be very faint over longer cable lengths, a fair amount of static can override the tone. You need to listen carefully on the longer runs.

For the price paid compared to other devices, this did the job and I would buy it again.
