USB 2.0 Video Grabber with Audio

Capture standard definition video to your computer's hard drive using this USB 2.0 Video Grabber from Monoprice!

This video capture device connects to a USB 2.0 port on your Windows-based PC. It features both a composite RCA and S-Video video input connection, as well as stereo RCA analog audio inputs, making it perfect for converting a VHS collection to DVD.

It provides real-time MPEG 1, MPEG 2, and MPEG 4 encoding in both PAL and NTSC standards. The included capture software allows you to specify the encoding format for both audio only (mp3 and wma) and audio/video capture, from wmv to DVD quality. It provides functionality for both capture and playback of the captured files, so you can check the capture for quality and accuracy before working with it. You can also take snapshots of the video as it is being played or recorded.

Note that the software supports capture and playback only. Third-party video editing software is needed to edit the captured files and third-party burning software is required to burn the video files to CD or DVD.

    Features:

    • Real time MPEG 1, MPEG 2, and MPEG 4 encoding
    • Supports the WMA, MPEG-4, AVI, VCD, SVCD, and DVD audio/video formats
    • Supports video bit rates from 1.2 ~ 6.0 Mbps
    • Supports the WMA and MP3 audio-only formats
    • Supports a 224kbps audio bitrate

Took some work but now working great

Pros: Cheap, seems to work fine once I used the on-disk software and did the audio fix.
Has S-Video, though it's hard to tell the difference vs composite.

Cons: Only format is .asf. Guess that's not that big a deal.

Ok, so the EZ Grabber software on monoprice didn't work at all. The HDAV Grabber software on the disk did work, but I had to do the Windows 7 audio fix explained on the disk. Now it's working great, video & audio quality are excellent.

Will not work with Windows 10

Cons: Will not work on Windows 10 machines. I have yet to try on a windows 8.1 machine but am assuming it will not work either.

The included drivers will not work with Windows 10. I have tried searching the web for similar drivers but have not had any luck. I reached out to Monoprice Tech support via email a few days ago regarding solutions and have yet to receive any response.

    Hello,

Thank you for your review and sorry about the delay in the response. Unfortunately we are experiencing a high volume of E-mail Support Requests, and we are working diligently to get to them as quickly as we can. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

We would not have updated drivers for Windows 10. I would recommend trying to install the drivers in compatibility mode to see if it might work.

Unfortunately we would be unable to post the review section is dedicated for a review of the product itself. The review guidelines state we will remove reviews with complaints regarding customer service. In order for us to post the review we would have to remove the Customer Service complaints. Please let me know if this would be acceptable or if you wish to re-write the review. I do apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

    Regards,
    Mark P.

Easy to use - worked well

Pros: Simple, cheap, easy to use

Cons: Female connectors on adapter mean that (for me at least) I needed a male to male cable to connect a VCR or camcorder.

I needed to copy an old videotape to my computer for archiving. A separate RCA cable is needed to connect to an old VCR. Once I connected that, I plugged in the USB, installed the software and was watching it on screen in minutes. The included capture software captured at a resolution good enough for an old VCR tape - probably not great for anything in HD. Capturing happens in real time - so if you want to copy a 3 hour video - it takes three hours (makes sense).

Pros: Cheap, simple to hook up, simple to operate once you get compatible software

Cons: May not work with included drivers and software depending on your OS

First off, I could not get the device to work in Windows 10. I couldn't get the driver to install. I tried about a dozen different drivers I found on the internet, but no dice. I would love to hear if anyone can get it working in 10.

Installed it on a Windows 7 64 machine. The bundled driver installed fine, but the included BlazeHDAV capture software did not work for me. When I tried capturing video from a composite source, it would capture 2-3 seconds of video and then just stop. After playing with the settings and getting nowhere, I decided to try different software.

I downloaded the EZ Grabber software linked to on this page, but it crashed when I initiated a capture.

After trying a few other software suggestions I found online, the one that worked for me was WinAVI Video Capture. Link:

    http://www.winavi.com/video-capture/

WinAVI automatically detected the video grabber device. The only error I had was something about being unable to record to the selected file path. I believe this is because the default recording folder didn't actually exist. I just changed it to save to the My Videos folder, and then it worked fine.

If this solution doesn't work for you, maybe a different driver or capture software will do the trick. Be prepared for the possibility of having to do some extensive Googling to get this thing to work. If you are willing to do that, this device is really a great deal once it works.
