USB 2.0 Video Grabber with Audio

Capture standard definition video to your computer's hard drive using this USB 2.0 Video Grabber from Monoprice!

This video capture device connects to a USB 2.0 port on your Windows-based PC. It features both a composite RCA and S-Video video input connection, as well as stereo RCA analog audio inputs, making it perfect for converting a VHS collection to DVD.

It provides real-time MPEG 1, MPEG 2, and MPEG 4 encoding in both PAL and NTSC standards. The included capture software allows you to specify the encoding format for both audio only (mp3 and wma) and audio/video capture, from wmv to DVD quality. It provides functionality for both capture and playback of the captured files, so you can check the capture for quality and accuracy before working with it. You can also take snapshots of the video as it is being played or recorded.

Note that the software supports capture and playback only. Third-party video editing software is needed to edit the captured files and third-party burning software is required to burn the video files to CD or DVD.

    • Real time MPEG 1, MPEG 2, and MPEG 4 encoding
    • Supports the WMA, MPEG-4, AVI, VCD, SVCD, and DVD audio/video formats
    • Supports video bit rates from 1.2 ~ 6.0 Mbps
    • Supports the WMA and MP3 audio-only formats
    • Supports a 224kbps audio bitrate
    • Capture snapshots in BMP or JPG format
    • Compatible with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit versions)

Hard to get working, but it does work.

Pros: Cheap, simple to hook up, simple to operate once you get compatible software

Cons: May not work with included drivers and software depending on your OS

First off, I could not get the device to work in Windows 10. I couldn't get the driver to install. I tried about a dozen different drivers I found on the internet, but no dice. I would love to hear if anyone can get it working in 10.

Installed it on a Windows 7 64 machine. The bundled driver installed fine, but the included BlazeHDAV capture software did not work for me. When I tried capturing video from a composite source, it would capture 2-3 seconds of video and then just stop. After playing with the settings and getting nowhere, I decided to try different software.

I downloaded the EZ Grabber software linked to on this page, but it crashed when I initiated a capture.

After trying a few other software suggestions I found online, the one that worked for me was WinAVI Video Capture. Link:

WinAVI automatically detected the video grabber device. The only error I had was something about being unable to record to the selected file path. I believe this is because the default recording folder didn't actually exist. I just changed it to save to the My Videos folder, and then it worked fine.

If this solution doesn't work for you, maybe a different driver or capture software will do the trick. Be prepared for the possibility of having to do some extensive Googling to get this thing to work. If you are willing to do that, this device is really a great deal once it works.

    It works

Pros: Video quality seems good, setup of hardware is fairly easy

Cons: Included software is not good, limited number of other software choices.

The bottom line is that it works. The included software is not very good (registration code wouldn't work at first, but late worked after a computer restart, and it doesn't record in very high quality), and a limited number of software programs will work (many would not recognize the audio). But once the right setup was in place, it worked.

    Pros: None

Cons: I can't even register it with the registration number that came in the package

I can't review it because I can't register it. It will not accept the registration code that came with the product

    Hello themusicman,

Thank you for your review on PID 5616. I am truly sorry to hear about the registration issues experienced with this video grabber. This can happen if the drivers are not installing properly. If I may ask, which Windows version is the computer running? Also, just to verify, do you receive any sort of error when entering in the registration number? Please let me know along with the order number for this purchase so we can best assist you in resolving this issue. Thank you!

    Pros: Great as a BusyBox.
    I Heart Monoprice.

Cons: Like "Grabbing" at water with your hands. Futile.

This product simply does not work. I tried it with 2 different PCs, VCRs, set of cables, etc... Tech support could not help, because there was just nothing left to try.
They did send another one out, but same result. Some sound, No Video. I received store credit which is fine I guess. But what am I going to do with all of these VHS tapes now???

    Pros: None

Cons: This is the worse video grabber I've ever put money on. The video is clear when I play the vhs from vcr to tv. When I hook up the Monoprice, the video was messy, it was scrambled and the sound was low. I thought for a min. that is was my tape, but I found that my tapes played well from vcr to tv, clear as a bell.

Truly sorry to hear PID 5616 didn't perform as it should. To better understand the issue, what OS are you running? Have you tried testing with a different computer to see if anything changes? Please let me know so that I may further assist you.
