It sounds like from this description that this really is an ethernet crossover adapter and does NOT reverse the pins, which would make a true "rollover" cable and is what I am looking for.

FYI: Gigabit-ethernet per standards requires auto-mdix and therefore, you can use an ordinary patch cable.

Do not use as Cat5e line extender/coupler
You are likely (like me) to be looking for a cat5e extender to lengthen a cable or something. These items are special purpose and should not be used for extending normal cables. The are also not cat5e rated. I would avoid these for any purpose. I hope Monoprice gets proper couplers soon.

    PROS: Good Price
    Monoprice service

CONS: Not Cat5e rated, you can pull apart and see that.
Also this is reversed wired for connecting two 100mbs PC's together
Not for extending a Cat5e cable

    Not quite as described
The couplers do not do a "full" reverse, but rather reverse as would apply for cables used for Ethernet up to 100mbps (100base-TX), which uses only two pairs. The actual pinout is
    1 - 3
    2 - 6
    3 - 1
    4 - 4
    5 - 5
    6 - 2
    7 - 7
    8 - 8

This makes them usable to couple two Ethernet patch cables to make a crossover cable for 100mbps Ethernet, but not for gigabit Ethernet. (They aren't anything even remotely constant impedance, but would probably be OK to couple short cables.)

For more info on crossover connections, check Wikipedia for "ethernet crossover cable" (sorry, no link, since I don't know if they are permitted in reviews)

The plastic shells can be easily snapped open and closed, for anyone ambitious enough to cut an splice wires to make a custom coupler.

PROS: Inexpensive, seem of reasonable quality

CONS: A mixture of reverse and straight through.

    Does what it says
It would be good if Monoprice offered a straight-through coupler along with this one.

PROS: Very inexpensive and does the job.

CONS: As noted in the description, this coupler reverses the pin order of the connected RJ-45 cables. Hence a pair of standard cables linked through the coupler becomes a cross-over cable. Alternately, a cross-over and a standard cable linked through the coupler works as a standard cable. Many current generation devices will automatically correct for reversed pin order, but older hardware can't cope. If necessary, you can use a pair of these couplers in your cable run to create a kludgey but functional straight-through cable.

    NOT REVERSE, THIS IS CROSSOVER
This (PID7279) seemed to be the same as PID 7282 when I did a wiremap of the pinout.

This does not "reverse" (aka rollover) the pins. Like others have said: the pinout is for crossover. I don't know why they call this product "reverse" and the other one "crossover" when they are designed the same. Bought 20 of these and was about to order 200 more when we noticed the mistake and now have to delay our project.

(Ordered in Q1 of 2016, hopefully they fix this)

    PROS: cheap
is a decent non-cat5e crossover adapter

    CONS: wrong description and title
