    Not for phone cases!
This works well if you're not buying it just because your aux cord's connector is too thick to get through your phone case. This product is not much thinner at all than the end of the average aux cord. Buy one of Monoprice's FLAT 3.5mm audio cables instead! Those have much thinner connectors, even thinner than the "made for mobile" cables.

    PROS: Works well.

CONS: Not meant for the use people keep buying it for which is why it often doesn't work for that.

    Great for iPhone!
This adaptor is perfect to connect headphones or a 3.5 mm audio cable to your iPhone if the case is preventing the original 3.5 mm plug from fitting in properly. Both my wife and I are using it for this purpose and I have passed one along to a friend as well.

PROS: Allows headphones and audio cables to be securely connected to an iPhone with a case that has a narrow headphone jack opening.

Product will likely not match photo, will likely not fit your phone case
TL:DR - The adapter they send you will most likely not be what is displayed in the photo. If you are in the market for an adapter that will help you use headphones with a plug that will not fit through your cell phone case or bumper then don't waste your time with this.

I read reviews for this product last year that said the adapter worked well for fitting through tight slots in cell phone cases and bumpers where headphone plugs typically will not. I made a purchase of it in April of 2013, and the product I received worked like a charm I received the exact item shown in the product listing photo. It had a narrow piece protruding from the base that fit perfectly through headphone slot of my Element iPhone 5 bumper case.

Within a few weeks the casing completely separated from the plug so that the inside was completely revealed. I requested a replacement from Monoprice as with my prior experiences their customer service was great, and they immediately sent out a replacement. However, the replacement did not match the original product I ordered, and was not what was (and currently is) displayed in the product listing photo. Please refer to the following photo:

The original adapter is on the left, and the replacement is on the right. My cell phone with its bumper case is displayed to better portray exactly why I specifically need the adapter on the left. The adapter on the right almost fits through the bumper but it will not snap in place and causes signal loss.

I explained to Monoprice that the replacement did not match my original purchase, and they gladly sent out a second replacement. Unfortunately the second replacement was the same as the first and it was also of no use to me. My only choice at this point was to continue to use the original adapter. The casing stays on for the most part, but I have to be careful with how I pull it from my phone or it slides off again.

Fast forward nine months to January of 2014. My friend ordered some new headphones and wants to use them with his phone. I let him try one of my replacement adapters but it does not fit through the headphone slot on his case. I figured I'd contact Monoprice to ask if there's any way to let me know whether the adapter they have in stock for Product ID 7161 matches the one currently shown in product listing photo or instead the replacements I received from them. I did not expect the rep to be able to do this as I figured the adapters are laying in a box somewhere off in a distant warehouse, and he informed me that this was the case and that it could take up to three weeks to answer my inquiry. He told me that the best course of action would be to order the plug and that if it was not the correct unit that I would be reimbursed for my purchase. If I was not given this reassurance I would not even have bothered to play the guessing game with Monoprice. He gave me the confidence to give it a shot though on January 9, 2014 I placed an order for two adapters - one for myself to replace the shoddy unit and one for my friend.

Sure enough both units I received are the same as my replacement adapter and not the original adapter (which they still display in the listing photo). You can see them all in the following photo:

The original adapter is at the top of the photo and the first replacement is at the bottom (disregard the other adapter in the upper left of the photo). I replied to the Monoprice rep (the one that that initially assisted and assured me of a refund) but got a response from another rep. They told me they'd set up the RMA but that it would only be for the price of the items, shipping excluded, and that they wanted me to mail the items back. I paid $1.83 for shipping to me (including the third adapter shown in the photo, to be fair), and while it's not much money it is my money wasted (I would not have bothered ordering the third adapter on its own). Monoprice now expects me to ship back the incorrect adapters so that they can refund me $1.06. I would likely be paying more than this to ship the adapters back to them. In addition, the rep that created my RMA copied and pasted a note from the original rep that fielded my inquiry. It mentioned that I wanted my shipping refunded and seemed to imply that it should be despite this the refund amount listed on the RMA excludes the shipping cost I paid.

I am extremely disappointed in Monoprice by this whole ordeal and have simply cancelled my RMA. It's only a few bucks I've lost, but its money needlessly lost. Prior to making my initial inquiry I did suspect that Monoprice still does not sell the product shown in the listing photo, and I was not considering blindly buying the product. I was assured by a rep that I would be refunded perhaps I misunderstood what he meant by that, but I thought that this would be a no-cost-to-the-customer proposition had they shipped the incorrect product. Instead, I'm expected to pay to ship them their $0.53 item x 2 in order to get a refund of $1.06 and take a net loss in the process.

I generally love Monoprice but their handling of this situation is highly disappointing.

P.S. Monoprice, if you’re reading this, please change the product listing photo if you have no intention of selling that item again. If your supplier is constantly changing and the product being sold is constantly changing as well I can understand that this is not plausible. However, as you can see from my experience and from the experiences of a few other reviewers, the adapter you show in your display photo serves a functionality that the product you ship out does not, and this distinction can make all the difference for the customer.

PROS: Will not degrade sound quality.

CONS: Unit shipped likely will not match photo.

Will likely not fit most phone cases/bumpers.

Original unit purchased came apart (shell/jacket separated from rest of plug).

Allows use of headphones with iPhone in protective case
Neck of plug is narrow enough to allow access of headphone jack through protective case. Works with either straight or angled plugs.

PROS: Well-designed for use with phones in protective cases

    CONS: None

Just what I needed to get into a case
My headphone connection is too large to be used with a phone case. This allows me to plug the headphones into this jack, then plug this jack into my phone. Very cheap solution.

    PROS: Price
    Works

Bought this for my car's AUX port. I use an HTC clip to wirelessly connect my phone to my car and it wouldn't fit so I needed something to extend the port. I bought the plastic kind (PID 7130) but I started to get a little bit of interference and sound loss so I bought one of these and it fixed the problem. Very great for the price.

Perfect For A Very Specific Purpose: Aux jack in car without removing iPhone case
I have a CaseCrown Bonbons Glider Case for my iPhone 5s. Before that, I've had two other cases from two other brands. They've all suffered from the same problem: namely normal 3.5mm stereo plugs are too wide at the base to allow full insertion.

This adapter solves this problem because of the small little riser where the plug meets the base. This riser allows the plug to fully insert into the headphone jack and still clear the case.

PROS: Does what it says on the tin.
    Quality metal used.
    Tight tolerances and good manufacturing.
    Excellent price.
Only adapter I've found with the riser at the base necessary to clear my iPhone case.

    CONS: None

    overall good

    PROS: works well

CONS: would come apart when pressure is applied
the pieces could be held together better if they used some strong glue

    Working, but..
Build quality is great but the fit isn't. More research wouldn't help me as this adapter seems small enough, but isn't.

    PROS: - Works great

    - Good looking and nice build quality

CONS: - Too big to actually fit through the hole in my cellphone case. While I thought this could do the trick, it is still too big.
