Ultra Slim Series USB 3.0 Cable, A Male to Micro B Male, 1 Ft Black

Connect your SuperSpeed USB 3.0 devices using this Ultra Slim Series USB 3.0 A Male to Micro B Male cable from Monoprice!

This cable features a USB 3.0 A male connector on one end and a USB 3.0 micro B male connector on the other end. The USB 3.0 micro B connector differs from the traditional USB 2.0 micro B connector in that it has an additional 5-pin plug, which carries power for external devices, such as portable hard drives.

It has an ultra slim design, which results in smaller and slimmer connector heads than ordinary cables. The A male connector head measures about 16mm wide, 8mm thick, and 20mm long. The micro B male connector head measures about 16mm wide, 7mm thick, and 20mm long.

    Good cable, overkill packaging

    Pros: well made

    Cons: useless expensive packaging.

The cable is exactly as described and works fine... as have every other cable that I've purchased from Monoprice. The price seemed quite high compared to other cables that I've purchased here. Once I received them I see why. I'm guessing the packaging cost at least as much as the cable. Probably more. Would look great on a retail store rack. Total overkill for someone ordering in bulk directly from Monoprice. A plain simple bag (like other cable's I've purchased here) and a lower price would be far preferable.

Pros: Considering the drive I'm connecting it to is a 5400 ... the speeds are fine. still hitting upper threshold of write speeds.

Cons: Reading some of the garbage some people have reviewed for this cable.

    It's a cable, it's fairly fast given that it's a 3.0 and it's cheap af.

If you're really worried about hitting something relative to 200MBps for under $5 you should probably just an hero and save us all having to suffer your thrifty elitism.

Not recommended throughput slower than cable bundled with drive

Pros: The cable feels reasonably well built.

Cons: The cable does not perform as well as the cable which shipped with the drive. Throughput is about 30% of what I get when using the cable that was bundled with my Seagate Backup Plus Slim.

Does NOT Write at USB 3.0 Speeds

Pros: The cable is nice and durable way better than the standard one that Western digital packages its products. (WD you should learn from this)

Cons: I bought this cable as a replacement cord for my WD Elements External drives. I tried connecting these drives both on windows and Mac. Sometimes it would take a minute for the drive to be recognized by the OS but once it was mounted, the cable READs at 3.0 speeds but does NOT write at USB 3.0 speeds. I'm hoping that this product will get fixed soon!. At the very least update the description so that folks know what they are getting b/c I didn't. USB 3.0 Write speeds are VERY important especially when you are transferring large files.

Perhaps this is WDs fault in that they designed a proprietary USB cable where cable makers have to reverse engineer the USB firmware to work properly with their devices (Just an assumption). If this is the case shame on WD for making such weak cable to package with their product to begin with. Then consumers will decide that the drive itself needs to be replace rather than the cord. If anyone else has a similar external drive from WD and its not working its likely the cause of the cable that WD packages is not durable enough to last and not the drive itself.

Good cable just need to make sure that the 3.0 WRITE speeds are what they say they are. Otherwise update the description so that you are not miss leading the customer on what it can do. I gave this product a 4 since it did not do as it described. I hope this gets fixed soon because monoprice makes great cables!

Thank you for your review on PID 11166. My apologies for the issues experienced with this USB 3.0 cable. If I may ask, what is the model number of the Western Digital external drive in use here? Did the provided WD cable work at 3.0 speeds for both reading and writing files? If possible, can we test the cable with a different USB 3.0 device such as another external drive? Please let me know so we can look into this matter further. Thank you in advance!

I tried with 3 external drives: 2TB WD Passport, 2TB WD Elements, and the 4TB WD My Book Studio. I don't know the specific model numbers. In all cases, I connected the drive to Mac OS, waited for the devices to connect, when they didn't connect I unplugged the USB cable and replugged it back into the USB slot and it connected.

Next, when I went to transfer data to the devices It took twice as long to write the data than it should have. When copying data from the devices, the read speeds worked at the proper speeds.

I found this in the system logs when attempting to connect/disconnect/reconnect one of the devices. I don't know it its related but it happened around the time that I was connecting one of the devices:

USBF: 54928.230 IOUSBCompositeDriver(CompositeDevice)::ConfigureDevice Could not get any configurations
    USBMSC Identifier (non-unique): 504C313333314C41473645445248 0x1058 0x1144 0x1019, 2
hfs: mounted DEVICE_NAME_HERE on device disk2s2

Thank you for the additional information. Just to verify, did the original cable shipped with the WD drive write at faster speeds? Is this being used with a hub or any adapters? Also, what was the transfer speed when writing with the new cables?

One troubleshoot we can try with the Windows computer is to ensure the HDD policy is set to Better Performance. To do this, please right-click on the Western Digital HDD, left click on Properties and go to the Hardware tab. Select the drive within that list and click on Properties. Finally, click the Change Settings button within the General tab and confirm the "Better Performance" and "Enable write caching on the device" options are selected. Please let me know your write speed results from there. Thank you for your patience!
