Access™ Series 16AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Speaker Wire, 50ft

Get the most out of your home audio system with high quality, oxygen-free, pure bare copper speaker wire from Monoprice!

This speaker wire features two conductors made of high purity (greater than 99.95% pure), oxygen-free bare copper. Pure Bare Copper is a superior conductor to the copper clad aluminum (CCA) conductors used in most other inexpensive speaker wire. CCA is only about 68% as conductive as pure bare copper. This additional resistance is added to the impedance of your speakers and can negatively effect the sound.

For the wire to have no audible effect, the total wire resistance should be no more than 5% of the lowest impedance of your speakers. Even speakers rated for a nominal 8-ohms, may dip to as low as 4-ohms at some frequencies, which further reduces the total cable resistance allowed in the wire. Using Pure Bare Copper speaker wire ensures that the total load put on the amplifier remains as close as possible to the impedance curve of your speakers.

For example, a 16AWG 2-conductor Pure Bare Copper speaker wire has a total resistance of 0.803 ohms per 100 feet (both directions must be considered). By comparison, a 16AWG 2-conductor CCA speaker wire has a total resistance of 1.181 ohms per 100 feet. Assuming 4 ohms is the lowest impedance of your speakers, a speaker wire run can be no more 0.2-ohms total. 20 feet of 16AWG Pure Bare Copper would be 0.1606 ohms, well under the 0.2-ohm limit. On the other hand, 20 feet of 16AWG CCA would be 0.2362 ohms, well OVER the 0.2-ohm limit.

Each conductor is jacketed with color-coded PVC for easy polarity identification. The entire cable assembly is jacketed in a white, CL2-rated PVC material. The CL2 rating indicates that the cable complies with fire safety and insurance requirements, making it safe for use inside the walls of residential class buildings.

Great wire, but not good at doing what it's not intended for.

Pros: They look great (when they're hidden in the walls)!

Cons: Not suitable for rock climbing

I connected my speakers to my receiver using these wires - and something amazing happened... I got sound!!!

Excellent wire, excellent price

Pros: Excellent and reliable products, at wholesale prices.

Cons: No faults with products or services, after several years of purchases.

When it comes to wire, Copper is King, and why it costs more than CCA (copper clad aluminum) wire.

After discovering Monoprice several years ago, and comparing products to other vendors, we have concluded Monoprice is our go-to wholesaler (price wise) for all our wire and other electrical accessory needs. Quality products, reliable service and lighting fast shipping, makes Monoprice our first choice. To example, currently they offer their Access Series 16/2 all copper 50 and 100 foot spools, at prices cheaper than auction sites offering the same size/length in a CCA product. Keep up the good work guys.

Pros: High Quality
Easy to Strip
Very flexible

Cons: None!

I love this wire. I originally bought this wire on fleabay at a higher price because I didn't know Monoprice sold it. This wire is great for speakers!

Good (at present) speaker cable

Pros: Wire seems to be of high quality. I can't verify claim of oxygen-free copper. (Does oxygen-free make any difference to people like me who lack Golden Ears?) Many fine strands in each wire, so it flexes easily. Red and black insulation clearly identifies which wire is which, a big convenience. No problem in my in-wall and under-floor installation. The stripped wire takes solder tinning easily, as it ought to. Gauge appears to be 16 ga, as advertised. Outer white-plastic jacket is loose and somewhat stretchy, but seems to be adequate to protect the two conductors inside from installation hazards.

Cons: None.

The original wire I used to connect my stereo receiver to my left loudspeaker was 16 ga lamp cord with black plastic insulation. Over the 50 years since I installed it, the plastic insulation has gotten very stiff with the slightest provocation, pieces of it break off, leaving bare wire exposed. (The wire to my right speaker is also lamp cord, but it has clear plastic insulation which is still in excellent shape.) So that crummy black lamp cord recently developed a short circuit. I have now replaced the old wire with this Monoprice product. Installation and soldering connectors onto the ends was no problem. I hope the insulation on this new wire ages better than what I put in 50 years ago I'll write an evaluation of this as an addendum to this review in 50 years, when I am 125 years old.

Wish it was offered in more lengths

Pros: Works great and was easy to work with.

Cons: A bit bulkier than regular speaker wire, which when pushing through holes in studs can become an issue. Also when pulled the inside wire recedes a bit from the end of the cover. And in the project I just completed (wiring my garage for sound), I really needed 100 ft and 75 ft spools. I wound up splicing one of the lines.

Good overall transmission though. Using my amp's B zone for the garage didn't require much more amplification than the theater does.
