S/PDIF Digital Optical Audio Cable, Toslink to Mini Toslink, 12ft

Experience superb sonic clarity and accurate musical reproduction with this S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio Cable from Monoprice!

The Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format provides for a Digital Optical Audio signal, commonly referred to as Toslink. Toslink allows for the distribution of uncompressed 2-channel PCM audio or compressed multichannel audio, such as DTS® or Dolby® 5.1 or 7.1. Being an optical signal, Toslink is immune to problems that can plague electrical signals, such as crosstalk, magnetic interference, or radio frequency interference.

Many laptop and small computers, including the Apple MacBook® and Mac® mini, feature a combination 3.5mm TRS stereo audio and S/PDIF Digital Optical Audio output port. This port can accept a standard 3.5mm headphone plug or a Mini Toslink plug.

This cable features a 3.5mm Mini Toslink connector on one end and a full-sized Toslink connector on the other end, with molded connector heads and strain-relief boots.

  • Full-sized male Digital Optical Audio (Toslink) connector on one end
  • 3.5mm male Mini Toslink connector on one end
  • 5.0 mm outside diameter
  • Molded strain-relief bootss reduce strain where the cable and connectors meet
  • Gold plated ferrule resists corrosion and provides maximum protection for the connector tip
  • Precision polished fiber tips for maximum signal transfer
  • Plastic tip protectors attached to each end to protect the optical cable when not in use

Pros: Inexpensive. Connectors fit devices correctly. Appears to be well made.

Cons: Optical conductor apparently not bonded to jacket or connectors.

Purchased this in September 2012 to connect devices to a MacBook Pro. I'm certain it was OK when I received it. Stored it loosely coiled in a one-gallon plastic 'zipper' bag.

I attempted to use it a couple of years later (fall 2014) and found that the optical 'conductor' was sticking out of the connectors on both ends by sizable fractions of an inch. Apparently the conductor 'floats' within the jacket and connectors, and the jacket must have shrunk a bit in length over time.

I carefully stretched the jacket by running it through pinched fingers and was able to get the ends of the optical conductor to retreat into the connectors. It's now working OK, but in just over an hour the conductor is starting to emerge from the 3.5 mm connector. Since I only use the cable occasionally the (temporary) fix may work for me.

It's hard to complain about it at the price ($3), but users might want to check the condition of theirs to avoid being unpleasantly surprised.

Thank you for your review on PID 1558! Truly sorry to hear about the issues experienced with the Mini Toslink connector. Unfortunately it appears as though you have received a defective cable. If you would like, I can assist you in setting up an RMA for a replacement as we cover our cables with a lifetime warranty. Obtaining the replacement would be of no additional cost to you. If you wish to proceed, please provide the order number and I can get that going right away. My apologies again for the trouble and I hope this helps!

Pros: Good solid full size optical audio connector on one end and the mini on the other. That is just what I needed.

Cons: Should have got a couple more at the time

I use optical cable to send the digital signal from my MacBook Pro to my sound system while mixing tracks from live band recordings. I don't have to worry about breaking optical cable mini adapters, this cable has a mini optical connector securely molded to it.

Great price, sufficient quality for my purposes

Pros: Inexpensive. Arrived quickly. As advertised.

Cons: This is not the cable for rugged use.

Quality was as-expected and sufficient for what I needed. I installed the toslink cable and have no reason to be constantly moving it, so expect it to last for a long time. Seems the audio quality is as good or better than the analog cable it replaced.

Pros: Looked like it would work if I could use it

The cable arrived very quickly. I couldn't use it but it was my own fault. I did not understand that the end was not a 3.5 mm jack because I had never used a Toslink cable before and misunderstood the descriptions I read. You can't see the light emitting from the end in a still picture. I was trying to connect my PS3 to a speaker system so I could use it with a projector. I have bought other cables to accomplish the same purpose with my 3.5 mm speakers. I will keep the Toslink cable in case I get a surround sound speaker system some day.
