HDMI® Audio Converter

Get the most out of your home theater system with this HDMI® Audio Converter from Monoprice!

The Monoprice HD Audio Converter taps into the incoming HDMI signal to produce Digital Optical, Digital Coaxial, and Analog 3.5mm TRS stereo audio outputs. The original, unaltered HDMI audio/video signal is sent to your display as normal, while the audio outputs can be connected to your home theater audio system for a superior audio experience.

The converter supports all HDMI 3D video modes and high-definition, multichannel audio, including Dolby TrueHD™ and DTS-HD Master Audio™. A switch on the back of the converter allows you to switch between two different audio modes. Mode A allows the capabilities of the display to be sent to the source device. In most cases, this limits the audio output to 2-channel PCM. Mode B allows the source device to output any available audio mode. This allows you to select advanced multichannel audio streams for playback on your home theater audio system.

Note: Monoprice strongly recommends using 22AWG, 24AWG, or active HDMI cables with Redmere technology to achieve the best results and to ensure minimum signal loss over longer distances.

Almost perfect.

Pros: Works as advertised, HDMI in, HDMI out, Audio gets "spliced" out to be sent to a receiver/stereo. I have a projector at the back of the room, and stereo at the front. I needed to split the audio out to the stereo, before sending the HDMI video along a long cable to the projector.

Cons: Looks like the HDMI output driver is not as strong as some. This unit has difficulty driving the long cable. It works initially, and then after ~5-10 minutes, the screen goes blank. If I reset this Audio Converter, the picture comes back...for 5-10 minutes. (Luckily, I have a 1-to-5 HDMI switch I am using, and if I use this Audi Converter to drive the switch, and then the output of the switch drives the long HDMI cable, all works OK).

As mentioned in the Cons section, if you have a long HDMI cable, this may have difficulty driving it. Although this depends on what is at the receiving end as well. Your results may vary. With a more typical length cable, this unit does exactly as advertised.

Great if you only need 2.0

Pros: Great for pulling basic 2.0 audio from HDMI when there is no Analog,or Digital audio out. (New Apple TV, Chromcast, Amazon Fire Stick, etc)

Cons: Does not seem to pull multi-channel audio from HDMI. Only 2.0

Bought this for our Demo room to showcase a Sonos 5.1 Playbar surround sound system. But after installing and testing with ATV, Blu-ray and also an XBox one it only seems to output the 2.0. (You can check the output in your controller and go under about my system). Maybe I'm missing something but we try several setup and all it would output was the 2.0 stereo. That being said we will still use these going forward for devices like the New Apple TV which only has HDMI out. It's great for house audio system to get 2.0 analog audio from HDMI only sources. If the Multi-channel worked I would gladly give it a 10.

Hello Bruce,

Thank you for your review and my apologies for the issues you have experienced with PID 10251. Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have received a defective product. If I may ask what output you are using on the converter? Also, if you set the mode switch on the back to mode B does it then give you the different audio modes?

Pros: Excellent product for the right people and need.

Cons: Doesn't work in feeding Toslink to older non-HDMI home theater receiver, with the HDMI going to a Samsung plasma.

The reality is that it is a Netflix problem. If you connect the optical digital feed to the receiver and video via HDMI to the display, you will only get a 2.0 stereo feed. That's because of newer Roku's using Dolby Digital +, which Toslink can't support. If I stream Amazon Prime or HBO GO, they will send a Dolby Digital signal to my receiver, which will give me a digital 5.1 solution. Looks like I need to return this splitter and find a cheap networked-HTR with minimum four HDMI inputs. Sorry, Monoprice...I thought this would really work!

Pros: Small and easy to hook up

Cons: Does NOT support dolby True HD/ DTS-HD Master audio output on the coax or optical connectors. Will pass them through the HDMI. This should be more clear on the description.

I bought this so I can get dolby true HD out of the coax or optical connection. I need to split the audio to my preamp and pass the video to my HDMI matrix. This doesnt decode those audio streams, only passes them through the HDMI connection. I will have to return this and get a HDMI splitter that supports Dolby true HD.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for your review on PID 10251! Regarding Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio, you are correct in that these audio codecs will only be supported via HDMI. Unfortunately, digital coax and optical Toslink are not able to provide the bandwidth needed to transmit these high-definition audio codecs at all and would only support two channel uncompressed PCM or compressed 5.1/7.1 audio. Only HDMI would be capable of handling Dolby True HD and DTS-HD MA even with other brand products.

Should you have any questions regarding our products, please feel free to contact our tech support team via live chat, phone, or email and we would be happy to assist you. My apologies for the trouble and I hope this helps!

Pros: Small, does exactly what it says it does, price point.

Cons: There will be a lot of wires coming off of it.

Firstly I was surprised by the small size of the item. It doesn't feel cheap by any means, the plugs are well made and sturdy. I have had other components where when you attach a cable, the port seems flimsy not the case here. The only issue I have is that it's a bit messy once you get everything connected. I'm not sure how else this could be built to ease this, maybe both in and out HDMI on the back to keep a clean face? I will just fab a mount to hide it away just having things on the front and back make this small item take up more space. Other than that I am very satisfied as usual with another item from Monoprice.
