Composite, S-Video, and HDMI® to HDMI® Converter and Switch w/ HDMI PAL NTSC Support

HDMI® is taking over the world, or at least the video world. All new TVs sport multiple HDMI inputs, while legacy inputs, such as composite and S-video are found on fewer and fewer displays. But what if you still have some legacy equipment, such as an old VHS player and VHS tapes? There is no need to throw it away or to get a replacement. Just get this Composite, S-Video, and HDMI to HDMI Converter from Monoprice!

The primary purpose of this converter is to take legacy Composite or S-Video input and convert it to HDMI for use on your newer HDTV. The converter accepts a low-resolution 480i legacy input and upscales it to a high-resolution 720p or 1080p HDMI digital signal.

The HDMI input allows the converter to perform upscaling on low-resolution HDMI signals, so you can view them at the full 720p/1080p resolution supported by your TV. The output can be switched from 720p to 1080p at the press of a button. Another small button on unit switches between the composite/s-video input and the HDMI input.

The converter is powered by a 5 VDC, 2A AC power adapter, which is included in the package. The AC adapter has a 46" long cord. The converter measures 5 1/16" x 3.5" x 1.0".

Pros: Easy to set up and use.
Small form factor fits with existing setup.

Cons: Lights are too bright.
Can get twitchy and lose the signal when switching between settings.

I bought this unit to act as a switch between two retro game systems. Since both are composite only, and my TV only has one composite input, this worked perfectly. I had an HDMI cable hooked up that wasn't in use so I plugged the converter into it. The picture is only slightly better (not great), but it is a digital signal, which means my TV won't freak out over having to accept an analog signal.

Pros: None.

Cons: Unit was defective upon receipt - cuts out intermittently but frequently. Too inexpensive to justify shipping cost and time to send it back.

Previous unit worked fine for several years. Will try another supplier.

Thank you for your review on PID 9994. My apologies for the signal issues experienced with this converter so far. If I may ask, what devices do you have connected to this converter? Also, what are the lengths and types of cables in use? Can we try the setup with the same cables that were used with your first unit? What about with different cables? If possible, can we also test the converter with a different source and/or display to see if the issues persist? Please let me know your results from there. If I am unable to assist you in resolving this issue, I can setup an RMA for a replacement as we have a one year warranty for this product. We will cover shipping costs if found defective so obtaining the replacement will be of no additional cost to you. Truly sorry for the trouble and I hope this helps!

Pros: Compact. Switchable from 720p to 1080p. May be a good solution to input older devices to modern HD TV's that no longer support composite inputs.

Cons: May not work with modern hd video capture cards. No aspect ratio adjustment.

I do retro gaming reviews on youtube. I got this to connect my old consoles using composite video out to change to HDMI out to connect to my Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket to record footage. The image did come on screen, but there was no audio. While the Rocket did let the image pass through, it would not recognize it as a recordable source, indicating that nothing was hooked up to it. I tested this with a Sega Dreamcast, and a PS2. In both cases no audio was coming through. I took the Rocket out of the chain and tested it on the TV itself. Aside from some strange flickering in some spots both the audio and the video seemed to work. For some reason this will not communicate with my Rocket, which is all I need it for.

This is probably an okay product for just hooking up older devices with composite out to HDMI only sets. My use for it is very specific, and probably only something a small percentage of people are going to use it for. While I don't think it's a huge deal it would be nice to see a choice for aspect ratio. In most cases your TV should let you control that, but it would be a nice feature to see in future iterations.
