5x1 Digital and Analog Audio/Video to HDMI® Converter Switch

Do you have a Wii®, PS2®, PS3®, Xbox 360®, and PC, and are looking for a way to hook them all up to your big-screen HDTV? Or are you an AV enthusiast with an older AV receiver, without HDMI® inputs and some older equipment with only DVI or Component outputs? This Converter/Switch is just what you need!

Until now, most AV switches supported just one type of video input - either component or HDMI, but not both. And if you have DVI, well, you've got to buy a converter to turn it into HDMI before you can use that. Now Monoprice offers the ultimate power-user's Video Converter Switch with HDMI, DVI, and component video inputs, plus a built-in converter module for HDMI video output.

The unit has two HDMI inputs, which is normal enough and lets you plug in your PS3 and Xbox360. The third input is set for DVI (digital, single-link) signals, so you can connect to your PC. The last two inputs are Component (YPbPr) video, so you can add your Wii and PS2. The DVI and Component inputs each allow for Analog stereo L/R, Digital Coaxial, or Digital Optical (Toslink) audio inputs.

The output of the unit is standard HDMI for your HDTV or for use with another switch, splitter, or HDMI matrix. Along with the audio on the HDMI signal, it also simultaneously outputs audio in Analog stereo L/R RCA, Digital Coaxial, and Digital Optical Toslink, so you can connect to your amplifier and get a room full of sound, no matter what type of inputs it supports.

Switching between inputs can be done manually with front panel controls, by using the included remote control, or by hooking up a computer to the RS232 connector and sending programmed signals. The unit remembers which input source was last used and will return to that source whenever it is powered on.

So, whether you're a power gamer or an AV enthusiast with older, but still serviceable, equipment, this Converter Switch is just what you've been looking for!

    Does not work

    Pros: None

    Cons: Does not work

Does not work to switch component video to HDMI. SIgnal flashes the TV on and off repeatedly, then finally gives out and stops. Switching component to HDMI is the only reason i got this and that doesnt work.

Thank you for your review and I am truly sorry for the issue you are encountering with this switch, have you tried this with a different set of devices or a different set of cables? You may also try lowering the resolution to see if that will work. I hope this helps, thank you!

    defective 5 x 1 HDMI converter switch (8146)

Pros: only works for my set top box

    Cons: does not work

does not work on my Blu Ray player at all , gives everything a heavy blue tint. People look like the blue man group. Hooked it up to my Samsung smart LED TV with cabling advised by monoprice (30' 22awg heavy gauge) and using monoprice 6' 24 AWG for the component hookups. Do not know if this is a defect inherent to this unit as other reviewers have mentioned "magenta" discolorations but will have to return everything if monoprice cannot solve my problem and I tried other HDMI cables and that did not help

    by Monoprice Administrator

Thank you for your review and truly sorry to hear about the experience you have had with PID 8146. If I may ask, were you connecting the Bluray player via HDMI cable or component cable? Does the same issue occur over other inputs on the switch? Have you tried a shorter HDMI cable from the switch to a display to see if there is any difference? What about a different resolution? Also, if possible, please try power cycling all devices associated with the switch as well.

Please let me know if the problem still occurs. If it does, I can assist you in obtaining a replacement to see if it will work better or a return RMA. We do cover this switch with a one year warranty and obtaining a replacement is of no additional cost. If you want to continue with an RMA, please let me know if you would prefer to return it or obtain a replacement. Thank you!

what do you mean by power cycling?? turn all off and then all on in some sequence??

    by Monoprice Administrator

That is correct. First remove all the cables (HDMI) and remove the power cable last. Once you have removed it, please wait about 30 seconds then plug in the power. Once you have seen the unit boot back up, plug in the Bluray player with a known good working HDMI cable, and then plug in an output device to the switch (using a short HDMI cable if possible) and see if you can get a good signal from there. Please let me know your results with all the troubleshooting steps listed. Thank you in advance!

went thorough all the audio settings carefully in terms of what I can do a initial set up without luck , spent 1/2 hour with hopes . I had a problem also with the hdmi connection to the HDMI box the monoprice cable from the blu ray requires a lot of fidgeting to make it be at the perfect angle to work, off by a teensy amount and it does not transmit but the amazon look a like cable worked immediately without fidgeting. Is that more likely a box problem and the female connector or the hdmi cable?? let me know. Heard to switch to an alternate hdmi on the avr is in such a tight space. Should I just return the box and exchange it??

    by Monoprice Administrator

In regards to the HDMI connection issue, does the Monoprice cable have this problem with other devices as well or just with the one port on the switch? As for the blue tint issue, we can try a replacement switch to see if that works better if you would like. Or I can help setup a return if you would prefer to try a completely different switch but our only other switch with component, DVI, and HDMI inputs would be PID 8145 ( http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011008&p_id=8145&seq=1&format=2&rep=gab ) which is a 3x1 switch. Please let me know how you would like to proceed and I can get either one started right away. Thank you!

yes take a return of the switch and let me try another one. I presume you will pay return fees? I will work on that cable and see if it does not work elsewhere.

My only separate suggestion would be for your HDMI wires to have more friction when they are inserted so you feel they are making a more compete contact as your competition's HDMI wires seem to do. This seems to be more of a problem as with this switch and your cable where they both have a certain "looseness" and together really loose. Not a problem when I have used your cables on other devices receiving the male ends.

Also even though I have the coaxial cable hooked in from my "older" receiver, the coaxial audio does not light up on the swtich to indicate it is receiving signal. Why is that??

one of the 4966 black is also a problem but not the 3960, it particularly will not make good contact

    by Anonymous
so do an RMA on it too please

    by Monoprice Administrator

No problem! That is correct, we cover shipping costs for defective items. I have setup an RMA for a return on the switch and a replacement for the cable.

A returns department representative will contact you by E-mail which will include RMA numbers along with instructions to follow as well as doing further troubleshooting with you as necessary. The E-mail should arrive within 24 hours. I apologize for the inconvenient experience you've faced while using our products. However, thank you very much for your patience.

*If you have any questions regarding shipping, RMA confirmation number, or RMA confirmation email, as well as RMA return status, please send your inquiries directly to the RMA dept at returns@monoprice.com and please include your RMA# in the email as reference. Sorry again for the trouble and hope this helps!

In regard to your question about the coaxial cable, you will need to make sure that it is selected by pressing the "coaxial" button on the remote. You may also need to adjust the settings on your receiver to ensure the correct input is selected. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Pros: RS232, digital and analog audio outputs.

Cons: No rack mount hardware included with the switch.

Bought two (2) of these switch/converters but BOTH are not passing HDMI sources properly. I verified the input source. The output image has a magenta hue and is shifted off to the right. Gave up on them tonight, I'll give them another try tomorrow...
