4x1 HDMI® Switch with Analog, Digital Coaxial, and Digital Optical Audio Outputs

Pros: It works as advertise and was easy to integrate into my Frankenstein system. It has S/PDIF both Toslink & RCA. The toslink is handy for carrying the digital audio over longish distances. Well thought-out and easy to operate. Even my Harmony remote could be programmed to work the IR switching. I'm quite pleased.

Cons: The only down sided is the bloody different surround sound formats that NOBODY seems to agree on using.....some seem to work, others do not! Fortunately even when I can't get true 5.1 or 6.1 DD, the Marantz can find a matrixed effect that will still allow a reasonably nice listening environment. It all works best with the DVD.

I would totally recommend this as an in expensive way to integrate a SS-system with aging components. I'm running a Marantz SR7200 Marantz DV6200, ROKU-XD, JVC HD-56G786, and the FiOS Motorola P7100-P2. Without the Monoprice 4x1 HDMI switcher, I just would not have been able to interface all of the stuff together. Nice product. Thanks!

Stereo jack to RCA pretty quiet on PS3 - (Everything else is great)

My setup:
- PC to input 1 (Using this for video transfer only)
- PS3 to input 2 (Using HDMI for video and audio)
- Soon to be PS4 (same like PS3)

Radioshack RCA splitter
- Desktop speakers (3.5mm jack) to RCA Y-splitter
- PC mobo speakers (3.5mm jack port) connected with 3.5mm to RCA Y-splitter Which give good enough audio for the desktop speakers
- The PlayStations are using the 3.5mm jack to RCA Y-splitter This audio from the PS3 is pretty quiet and I have to almost put the speakers up to max volume

I love the device since I got it. It does its job of splitting what I'm using this for. The only downside about this product is how quiet the sound is from my speakers. Before, I was connecting the PS3 from the propitiatory PS3 to RCA port. The speakers I am using are simple $25 Logitech desktop speakers (3.5mm [Male]) that are connected to a 3.5mm (Female) to an RCA audio male Y-cable. I am using this set-up because I only want to use my monitor. So far from what I tried on the PlayStation is good. I just have to almost max my audio, where when I switch back to the computer source I have to make sure not to max out the volume of the speakers before I use that audio.

Besides that little setback, I love this device, just wish that audio problem was fixed.

Doesn't work as advertized

Pros: Small and inexpensive

Cons: It doesn’t down convert 5.1 neither 7.1 audio to stereo output and makes noise on stereo output.

When 5.1 audio is send over HDMI, only left and right channels are send to stereo output. Neither center channel neither surround channels are sent to stereo output. It makes no sense because dialogs – send to central channel – are lost. I tried couple of options including DTS, Dolby and LPCM. Nothing. Only left and right channels went to stereo output.
Monoprice should be clear about it. It is better to have fewer sales than returns and bad reviews.
I am still looking for device passing all formats to receiver and down converting audio to stereo for headphones.

Thank you for your review. Have you tried emulating 2.1 on the specific device to see if it'll output it accordingly? What devices are you connecting this to? Please let me know, thank you!

Picture works but not the sound

Pros: Compact device at a reasonable price.

Cons: Sound doesn't pass through via coax.

Older high end surround processor doesn't support HDMI. Intended to use this switch to pass through HDMI signal from several sources, feed the HDMI out to the projector for the picture, while splitting the audio out to the coax to the processor, in order to avoid using the inferior optical out audio being used by multi-media player, DVD and xbox. The picture to the projector from all 3 sources works with no problems. But the sound via coax from all 3 sources to the processor is jumpy. Monoprice has issued RMA to exchange the box but before going through the trouble, I'd like to know if this is a one-off product issue and hope a new one fixes it or is it a known issue? Or am I doing something wrong?

Replacement switch arrived today and I gave it a try. The sound was an improvement but still had some choppiness in the sound. Went back into the source settings to see if anything else could be adjusted. Rather than using auto, I used manual and pared down the choices to the only very basic Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS. Though my processor isn't capable of handling some of the more advanced sound types like True HD, etc., it normally doesn't matter if its checked or not because it automatically steps down to one that it will support. But for some reason, by unchecking most of the selections and just leaving the basic ones, it solved the choppiness for the most part. There's still a few tracks on the media player that's a little choppy playing movies off of a NAS. But DVDs from DVD player and PS3 are now OK. Is there a signal loss here that can be helped by better (perhaps Redmere) cables, though the distance I'm covering is only a foot or so?

by Monoprice Administrator
Thank you for the update. Glad to hear that you were able to fix the choppy audio for the most part. In regard to your question, you have everything connected with the same cables that I would personally use. Redmere cables wouldn't make a difference here due to the short length of the run. I mostly recommend those for longer distances such as over 25ft. I also only suggest using Redmere when connecting from the switch to the display. They sometimes don't work as well when connecting between the source devices and switch as they draw power from the "TV" end of the cable and the inputs on the switch may not provide enough power to output the signal.
