Mini Headphone Amplifier for Guitar - "Lead Overdrive"

As a musician you know you need to practice regularly to hone your skills and learn new songs. However, you can't always break out the amps and crank up the volume. For those times when quiet is required, you can both practice and hear the amplified output from your instrument using this Mini Headphone Amplifier for Guitar from Monoprice!

This amplifier is designed to provide amplification to the output of instrument level devices, such as electric guitars and bass guitars. It features a 1/4" TS plug, which plugs directly into your instrument's output. It is powered by two AAA batteries (not included) and has a 3.5mm TRS output for listening with headphones.

An additional 3.5mm TRS auxiliary input is provided for connecting another audio source, such as an mp3 player. The audio from the Aux jack is mixed with the audio from the guitar so you can play along to an existing recording.

This amplifier produces a "Lead Overdrive" sound with distortion and delay reminiscent of Stadium Rock performances. The amplifier includes analog Gain, Tone, and Volume controls.

Note: The distortion effect that this amplifier produces means that there will necessarily be some background hiss/noise, even at normal volume levels. If you listen to the amplifier without it being plugged into a guitar, the noise level can be loud and pronounced. However, when it is plugged into a guitar the signal returns to a desirable noise level for playing.

Fun little device for the price

    Pros: size
    price

    Cons: delay

Like other reviewers have mentioned it does have an echo or a delay that is a bit odd. Still for the sale price it is a lot of fun when I don't want to be tied to one place or lug around a real amp. It's more fun than practicing unplugged. I'm sure the non-overdrive models are nicer, but this one is fun.

Built-in echo can't be turned off

    Pros: Price

Cons: Built-in echo effect can't be turned off, very annoying.

This would be fine - for the price - if it didn't have a built-in echo effect that is always on. The echo effect is not a reverb - like the description says its more of a delay, however its not like stadium rock its like having a delay effect added. When playing chords its less noticeable, but playing solos you can't get away from it. Probably why this one is on clearance.

    Pros: they work

    Cons: everything else

All the dials use the wrong kind of potentiometers. The result being that the 'usable' range of the dials is about the first 10% and the rest is too loud or sounds too similar. The dials have no indication of which way to dial them, so the first time you use it, you will probably destroy your ears with volume. They go ridiculously loud (and not in a good way), and given that most of the range of both the tone and gain dials is unusable, the ability to get a decent tone is nearly non-existent.

I wasn't expecting much for $12, but it would have been nice for them to at least be built with appropriate parts. All three of these amplifiers exhibit the same issues.

Does Not Sound Like an Overdriven Amp

Pros: Turned on on insertion of batteries.

Cons: Constant, invariable noise regardless of volume, tone, and gain settings.
Volume and gain have no influence over guitar tone.
Tone control doesn't seem to do anything except rotate.

There is a loud background noise at constant pitch that appears at any volume and gain setting. It's totally independent of the guitar. The noise seems to be at a constant volume so it's less noticeable at higher volumes, but is always at least as loud as the guitar. The amp doesn't sound like an overdriven amp. It sounds like a clean amp with another sound source on a different track. The guitar tone hardly varies with changes in volume and gain.

Nice Sound Quality, all without disturbing everyone else!

Pros: Great sound quality, especially if you have a good pair of earphones

I really like the way that the amplifier sounds. I was expecting it to sound really cheap for its price and size, but it exceeded my expectations. I like the option to plug in the source of the sound you're trying to play along with for practice as well, it's very intuitive!
