Route 66 Modern Solid Body Electric Guitar - Goldtop

So what do you do if you have a successful product launch, like we've had with our Route 66 Vintage Solid Body Guitars? Well, if you're Monoprice you listen to customer feedback, make improvements, and release a new version that addresses those concerns. Enter the new Route 66 Modern Solid Body Electric Guitar from Monoprice!

The most obvious change is that we've eliminated the plastic pick guard and the plastic label around the pickup select switch. This allows you to see all of the beautiful finish of your choice, without being obscured by the plastic bits. In a bid to modern styling, we've sharpened the horn below the cutaway, giving an "edgier" look to the guitar body.

One of the standard complaints about the Vintage version was the quality of the strings. Not only have we increased the gauge from 0.009 to 0.010 inch on the high E string, but we are now using our coated strings, for increased durability as well as sonic excellence.

Finally, we adjusted the orientation of the volume and tone knobs. The entire knob assembly was rotated 90° counterclockwise so that the orientation of the knobs corresponds to the orientation and location of the pickups. So the neck pickup, which is on your left when wearing the guitar, is controlled by the leftmost knobs, while the bridge pickup (on the right) is controlled by the rightmost knobs.

The rest of the guitar remains the same as the Route 66 Vintage model. It is a full-sized, 22-fret guitar with a basswood archtop single-cutaway body, a bolt-on maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and chrome machine heads/tuning pegs. It uses two dual-coil humbuckers, which produce the distinctive sound used in southern rock, heavy metal, electric blues, reggae, and classic hard rock. A three-position switch on the body above the fingerboard allows you to easily select between the bridge and neck pups, or both together.

Before it gets shipped to you, each Monoprice guitar undergoes a setup, tuning, and inspection process by Master Luthier Roger Gresco here in Southern California. The setup ensures that the neck is straight, the action is right, and that it will stay in tune. Additionally, it comes with everything you need to get started, including strings (installed), a heavy-duty zippered black gig bag with shoulder strap, and a truss-rod wrench.

Pros: The guitar was doubled boxed for safe shipping (across country) and arrived with no damage.

The gold top finish looks great as well as the brown paint on the back that shows the natural wood grain. Thinner and lighter than my Les Paul Custom, I will play this often.

I thought I would replace the PUPS but these sound great clean or with overdrive. Their frequency response pairs well with the wood and is very balanced.

Cons: The volume and tone controls are certainly linear tapered and not audio tapered. Not a big problem to me but it may been an issue for some.

The frets are leveled, crowned, and the edges are finished, but the frets are rough and not polished at all. Easily fixed with micro mesh.

The strings did not allow slides very well. Plan to put your favorite strings on here.

There was some of the foam/glue from the outer bag that is was shipped in I believe stuck to the paint. I rubbed mayonnaise on it, waited ten minutes, and gently rubbed off with a tissue. With some patience there was no damage at all.

The positive reviews here are warranted. This is a great guitar for the money.

You should buy Lock Straps. Just do it. The bolts included are the same thread and longer than stock. This is a must to protect the guitar.. These and a strap and it will be ready to play.

The finish is Very good and set-up seems to be right on the mark. It sounds great right out of the box and much better than other inexpensive guitars I have peurchased in the past. I have played for over 30 years and am also a guitar colector. Beleive me you can't beat this deal!

    Pros: Good Tone
    Set up
    New Logo

    Cons: Subpar Tuners
    Lack of quality control
    Weak POTS

Extended stay in California and brought my California Classic but was want to play my Route 66 . So instead of shipping it to California I bought another one because it was on sale and want another one to mod out.

Side line here. I bought Monoprice guitars for a bonfire on a annual camping trip but they played and sound so good I use them for traveling and of course I didn't use the included travel bag. As good as any Epi I have owned or played.

First things: Toggle switch was broken. The switch was not assembled and yet mounted and soldered in....easy fix. Where is the quality control by the Luthier? Speaking of the inspection by the Luthier where is the certificate that says it was inspected by Roger as the past few guitars I purchase had. Is Roger no longer working there I wonder? Not a real issue but I notice this. There was a buzz on the High E at the 8th fret again easy fix.

There is no longer MONOPRICE printed on the head just a M logo. I know many have complained about the MONOPRICE logo. I didn't mind the old logo but I have to say the M does look better and for those who are ashamed or want to cover the logo up it has never been easier to do so.

The build: The frets were smooth and didn't need reworked or filed. Neck was straight but the nut had plastic burrs from cutting the slots that didn't get cleaned up. The neck needed oil dressing as it was drier than the Mojave river. There were no noticable flaws or blemishes in the paint. The volume and tone controls work but will need to be replace due to poor tapering on the tone control side. The tuning heads are better than the goldtop Route 66 but and will be replace down the road. Tuners are better or I got a better set this time. Only this I notice was the tail stop bar post mount was not set in flushed. Intonation was spot on.

The sound: It didn't disappoint as the other RT 66 did not. In fact it sounds better as the Goldtop was a little muddy this one is not which makes me think that I will mod out the Goldtop.. Tone is subjective but it was easy to dial in a tone simular to other guitars of this style I own.

Conclusion: I enjoyed my other Rt 66 over the past two years and this one looks to be one that will be a pleasure as well. Note that I have bought a few more high end guitars in this time yet it doesn't diminished the regard I have for my Monoprice guitars they are a great value.

Monoprice offers products at a reasonable price and outstanding quality that keeps me comming back together that is value.

    Pros: Amazing price
    Great quality

    Cons: None.

Just received my Route 66 and I must say I'm very impressed! For the price I paid I wasn't expecting much but it turns out this guitar is much nicer than the other ones I own and paid well over $500 for it.

It's a solid instrument, I read others mentioning the setup, but that's normal for any new guitar, it'll only sound how you like after you put the strings you like and setup the guitar as you enjoy it.

Anyway, this is a great practicing guitar. Quality is good, all electronics are working as expected, the tuning machines are very smooth.

I'm coming back here on Christmas, you bet some people I know will be getting this guitar from Santa!

    Pros: -Plays well
-Stays in tune nicely (even through a lot of note-bending solos and alternate tuning changes)
    -Sounds nice
-Solid neck construction (intonation is great octave frets match tuning perfectly)
-No fretting issues at all (despite what some other reviewers have stated)
-Looks good and feels heavy (like a Les Paul does)

Cons: -The pickups aren't the best you will get some buzz if you are close to fluorescent lights.
-Was not in tune when I received it (though this was probably due to it being shipping in hot weather via UPS trucks), but no big deal at all

I just played my first gig with this guitar and I must say I am truly impressed. Monoprice, you have built an excellent budget guitar that is worth well beyond the price.

Last night, I played on a nearly 100-degree stage in front of about 450 people, and this guitar held up beautifully for four hours. I'm a budget-minded musician, so I don't have a row of axes at the ready for tuning changes, etc. I've played guitar for 30 years, and my old guitars (top brand that starts with an "F") never held up this well through my many solos, alternate tunings, and MUCH sweat.

Thank you, Monoprice, for crafting such a solid piece of work for the budget-conscious consumer. If you are a guitarist, this is a must-buy.

If you're thinking of buying this guitar, don't hesitate. It's a solid axe and, in my opinion, as good as any $400-$500 guitar out there. I"m going to buy another one.

    Well done, Monoprice!
