Premium 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with Subwoofer

While superb sound quality is the ultimate goal of any home audio system, the realities of budget and even aesthetics often force compromises in sound quality. Well, the time for compromise is over. Now you can have it all - great sound, great looks, small size, and an unbelievably low price!

The Monoprice Premium 5.1-Channel Home Theater System surpasses all expectations for sound quality in a small package. The four satellite and the single center speakers each use a 3" polypropylene mid-range driver and a 3/4" aluminum dome tweeter. They can handle up 100 watts of power and have an impedance of 8 ohms.

The satellite and center channel speakers handle frequencies from 110Hz to 20kHz ±3dB, with the crossover between the mid-range and tweeter drivers set to 3.5KHz. The powered subwoofer features an 8" downward firing speaker driven by a 200 watt amplifier. It handles frequencies from 30Hz to 150Hz (-10dB) and uses a variable crossover from 40-150Hz.

The satellites measure only about 6.9" x 4.3" x 4.3" (HWD) and weigh about 2.9 lbs each, making them easy to mount almost anywhere. The center channel speaker measures about 4.3" x 10.2" x 4.3" (HWD) and weighs 3.0 lbs. Both the satellite and center speakers are equipped with a universal 1/4" threaded insert mounting options and have rear-firing ports, so they sound best when there is some breathing room behind them.

The subwoofer is a 12.6" cube and weighs about 20 lbs. It features four large rubber feet, which keep the downward firing driver off the floor. It includes both line and speaker level stereo inputs, so it can be used with any amplifier. A phase control switch on the back allows you to adjust the phase of the subwoofer in relation to the rest of the system.

So when looking for speakers for your home audio system, make the no compromise choice and enjoy superb sound quality and a stunning sound stage with the Monoprice Premium 5.1-Channel Home Theater System!

    very good value for price

Pros: Great sound for the price .Matte black finish doesn't show fingerprints

    Cons: none

I was also skeptical about these speakers but with the 30 day return policy I thought I would give them a try. I liked them so much that I was going to order 2 more satellite speakers. When I went back to the Monoprice website to place my order I saw a pair of premium tower speakers for sale ( no longer available ) I ordered the tower speakers and I'll tell you this system rocks !! I can't believe that I only paid $265.00 for the entire speaker system they are easily worth 2x the amount. .I use them in a 13 x 20 room with a vaulted ceiling paired with an Onkyo TX-NR636 home theater .I use them for mostly listening to music and I am very happy with the sound. Not state of the art but I only paid $625.00 for the entire system. If you are on a budget get these speakers. ( also order the 5.25 inch tower speakers to make your system 7.1, if they are like the large ones no longer available you won't be disappointed )

    Best Boom for Buck

Pros: Great Value, small package, powerful output, looks appealing.

Cons: Takes a while to break in, does better in smaller volume environments.

I am really impressed by this stereo setup! I have had this for at least half a year now and continue to be impressed by this. I have the 5.1 surround setup in my living room (20'x11') with speakers satellite mounted on the ceiling. For being smaller speakers it really fills the room nicely with sound. I am using a Yamaha RX-V377 receiver. I use the 5.1 surround setting for music and the spectacle setting for movies. I have subwoofer frequency set to 3/4 and the bass level on 5/12 and WOW, it really booms! I can highly recommend this stereo and believe it is the best boom for buck. One piece of advice is to keep the volumes low until the speakers and sub are broke in. I have taken 6 months of daily use to progressively turn up the power and volume and it just continues to sound better, louder, powerful, & crystal clear!

Probably the best 5.1 Surround Speaker set for the price

Pros: - Great sound! Just let the 'break-in' pass and now I'm enjoying the real rich and full sound.

    Cons: None so far.

I bought an extra pair of Banana Plugs, hoping they can be used on the speakers as well. But they can't be - either bare wire or pin plugs accepted. Not a deal-breaker, but would be a nice feature to have.

The subwoofer requires a RCA Y-adapter. I'd have loved to get a single RCA wire, having one end split into Y cables (which Monoprice doesn't sell currently), instead of a separate adapter.

    Excellent Budget Speaker System

    Pros: Size, Clarity, Extension

Cons: Nothing specific to this set. Like any set with size and price compromises, this set will suffer in terms of volume, bass extension, and maybe frequency response.

I bought this set for my parents. They had an old Bose AM-3 2.1 system with in-ceiling speakers for surround. We kept the surrounds and used this system for the sub, left, right, and center. The other two satellites will be used in my desk system.

I found this system to provide excellent sound, especially in terms of clarity and high frequency extension. The sub integrates well with the satellites. In their application, the sub is poorly located inside a media wall, so I know it could sound better, but it works well for them. I'd like to see Monoprice come out with an inexpensive surround/sub wireless transmitter & receiver that could be used with a system like this. Say, under $50 price point. That would allow me to move their new sub to a much better sounding location.

Having a center channel dramatically improved the dialog over the old system. Music sounds excellent. The sub amp has all the basic settings, auto on, phase, crossover, and volume. Curiously, the variable crossover and volume are in-circuit when the low level input is used. Most subs only use those adjustments with the speaker level inputs.

They don't play loudly, so I can't comment on party level SPLs, but they told me they watched a movie with some action and they felt like they were in a movie theater! (Well, who wouldn't coming from Bose AM-3s!)

For those with budget and size constraints, I couldn't recommend this set more. See CNET for a better review.
