Professional Coaxial, RJ-45, and RJ-11/12 Multifunction Tester w/ LCD Display

The Monoprice LAN Cable Solution is one of the easiest to use and most complete multifunction cable testers available.

This unit can test the integrity of RJ45, RJ11/12, F-type Coax, and BNC Coax cables for shorts, open conductors, crossed wires, and cable length. The 16 x 4 character LCD display shows either Pass or Fail on any cable test, and if Failed, the specific wires that failed and the type of failure.

The Loopback testing mode can test any RJ type cable (11/12/45) with each end connected directly to the tester. This can test for Open, Short, Crossed, or Split conditions for each conductor. It also identifies whether the RJ cable is shielded or unshielded. Additionally, it can show the distance along the cable at which an Open occurs using the built-in Time Delay Reflectometer (TDR), allowing you to easily locate the point of failure. Cable length can be tested out to 350 meters.

When testing Coax type cables and RJ45 with the ends at different locations, the included Remote Terminator is used to test for Open, Short, or Crossed connections. When an Open condition is detected, the distance to the break point is displayed. The Remote Terminator is stored in the base of the unit and can be easily removed for testing.

Both the Length and Tone modes are tested without a terminator or direct connection to the other end of the cable. The length mode shows the total length of the cable, or the length to any existing cable break. In Tone mode the tester sends a tone down the cable, which can be sensed using an Amplifier Probe (not included). This can be used identify cables within a bundle or as an alternate method of locating cable breaks.

A built-in memory module allows you to store 8 results each for LAN and TEL modes, plus 4 results each for Coax and Length modes. The tester has an automatic power-off feature to save battery life, which kicks in after 5 minutes of nonuse in all modes except TONE mode, and after 30 minutes in TONE mode.

WARNING!!! Do not test live circuits as it could cause damage to the tester unit or personal injury.

    Pretty good for the price
If you need a professional certifier, go buy a Fluke this isn't it. If you need something more elaborate than a simple LAN continuity tester, and/or you want something you can throw in the toolkit and not worry too much about bumping it around, this is as perfect as any I've found. The "manual" really isn't, but if you can handle pushing a few buttons, you can figure this unit out.

All in all, not perfect, but great for the money, and I'm glad I bought it. Thanks Monoprice!

PROS: * Length and cable break measurements
    * Tests all the cables I work with (RG-*, CAT-*)
    * Provides tone generator for cable tracing
    * Included BNC adapters
    * Included zipper case

CONS: * Remote unit does not detect split pairs (so figure out how to do a loopback to the main unit, if you need that)
    * Remote unit does not provide sound output for the main unit's tone generator (how hard could that be??)
    * Unit only runs its test once not good for "wiggle test" (i.e. testing for continuity/intermittent connection loss)
    * Just a tester, not a certifier (but what do you want for this money?!)

    Great bang for the buck
Cable testers come in a variety of types, I'd lump them in 3 categories:
Simple - $10.00-$100.00 Tests continuity shorts, opens, crossed pairs.
    Generates tones for location/identification
Many have remote terminators to test in-wall cables.

Advanced - $100- $400 Tests continuity shorts, opens, crossed pairs, split pairs, length.
Generates tones. Most have remote terminators, can have multiple terminators with addresses to do identification.

Full blown - Big $$$ Tests everything including near and far-end crosstalk db loss at specific frequencies, and can certify CAT levels.

This is my third LAN cable tester. First was a Progressive 468 "simple" that does connectivity shorts opens and crossed, generates tones.
No length or split pairs. I still own it, it does what it does fairly well. Paid too much for it, around $150.00 in 2000.

Second is a Microtest (now Fluke) MicroScanner "Advanced". Great unit, expensive (over $300.00 in '03), and it failed recently. Does open short crossed, split and length.
If it hadn't failed I wouldn't have purchased the MonoPrice unit.

Which features do you really need? Well you REALLY need the basics from the "simple" category.
Advanced features like length can come in handy if you're troubleshooting a network someone else wired.
Maybe a run is too long, or measures open at 80 feet and you KNOW the run is at least 200 feet, so you can investigate and find that the HVAC guys cut a cable in the ceiling.
Split pair detection is definitely handy particularly with crimped patch cables.

When I received the MonoPrice unit, I was surprised at how big it is. A bit bulky compared to my other testers, but I'll get used to it.

I decided to put it through its paces. Partly to evaluate how well it does, can I trust a $85.00 tester? And partly to be familiar with it and know what to expect to see when encountering cable problems.

First I tested some known-good cables, and cable runs. It seems to work fine and length display appears to be pretty accurate.

Next I made a cable with 2 110 punchdown jacks and created various faults. The tester found opens, shorts, and even split pairs (in local loop mode).
I remembered reading something on the MonoPrice website that implied that it didn't detect split pairs in remote mode, and the manual confirms this.
I tested it anyway, and sure enough it doesn't detect it. Is this a showstopper?
Not really. You're more likely to find a split pair in a crimped patch cable. With punched-down wall jacks/patch panels you'd have to really screw up to get a split pair.
That said one isn't always checking their own work, often times you're troubleshooting a network that someone else wired.

A few things disappointed me, but I have to keep reminding myself, it was $85.00

It appears to be custom made for MonoPrice, you'd think they would do a re-write of the manual as the "engrish" is pretty bad. It's understandable but … oh wait, it's $85.00 never mind.

Tests don't run continuously. Once it has decided pass/fail it stops until you press test again. Troublesome if you're wiggling a suspected intermittent cable.

No split pairs in remote mode. Ok, it's $85.00 but I'd have never purchased it if it didn't do split pairs, and as mentioned before it's unlikely you'll find a split pair in punched down wiring, but not completely unheard-of.

Overall, I'm very pleased with it for the money. Yes, I'm hoping I can repair my Microscanner, but I needed a tester ASAP during a company move,
and this unit really gives a lot of bang for the buck.

Highly recommended especially at the price.

    PROS: Very reasonably priced.
    Large easy to read display
    Easy to use
    Carry case included
    Includes remote terminator
    Terminator beeps
    Terminator stores inside main unit
    Backlight
Measures length (unheard-of at this price point)

    CONS: A bit big
Can't detect split pairs in remote mode
Have to remember to store settings
    Engrish manual

    Best Value !
Overall BEST VALUE that I could find online when comparing features versus price. Lives up to advertising so far.

PROS: Best Value for functionality vs. price in category. Works as advertised and easily switches between english or metric.

CONS: Manual could have more details although menus are mostly intuitive. Have read reviews reporting that device drains batteries, but have not experienced this as I shut it off in between readings and not a heavy user. I don't' use the auto-off feature.

    Nice Tester
works Great and is a nice upgrade to my toolkit
    Amazingly useful!
I've had this tester for a little more than a year and I use it on at least a weekly basis, with some BIG jobs throughout the year involving heavy use. It's always done its job, and I've been really happy with the unit.

    PROS: Reliable

    Useful data

Works for F and, with an adapter, BNC connections as well!

    Looks impressive

    Monoprice comes through again
I have only used it for Ethernet cable testing. Does not test and measure length in one test one test for a continuity another for length. Not a big deal I am not dealing with long cable runs.

PROS: Audible tone on remote is nice

CONS: Battery was very near death. On option for testing crossover cables resulting in "PASS" would be nice instead it displays "FAIL" "CROSS".

    Great tester, great price!
It took me a little bit to figure out the nuances of this tester, but once I did, I love it! It's SOOOO much better than the cheap cat5 tester I was using. The cable length feature is great too.

I couldn't have done my network/telephone/coaxial cables without this tool
It does what it says and does it well. I'm very glad I purchased this tool.
    Love MonoPrice too.

PROS: It works great & is easy to use.

CONS: It loses it's settings & length calibration every time it automatically turns off.

    Multifunction Lan & Coax Tester
Have used it already a bit and it does what its supposed to.
At this price you can't really go wrong

    PROS: Multi featured tool
Price vs competition very good- value
    Has a back light
    Auto shutdown
Half decent zipper case with accessory pocket

CONS: A Bit of glue inside the lcd screen, long hair type strip but off to the side so doesn't effect the reading or such

Professional Coaxial, RJ-45, and RJ-11/12 Multifunction Tester w/ LCD Display
I initially ordered this unit, and the original unit failed. But Monoprice replaced my unit and I have not had any problems since. I will buy an additional one, so I can keep one in my away bag, and another in my service department.

PROS: Works correctly for cable testing and TDR (length)

    CONS: none
