Mini DisplayPort 1.1 + USB to Dual-Link DVI Adapter

Connect your mini DisplayPort equipped MacBook®, laptop, or PC to a Dual-Link DVI display using this Mini DisplayPort + USB to Dual-Link DVI Adapter from Monoprice.

This adapter converts DisplayPort video to Dual-Link DVI video at resolutions up to 2560x1600. Additionally, it can convert to Single-Link DVI to resolutions up to 1920x1080. The adapter is fully compatible with the DisplayPort 1.1 specification and draws the necessary power from both the DisplayPort and USB connections. Note that this is not bidirectional and therefore will NOT convert DVI video to mini DisplayPort. Also note that this does not support audio.

    Features:

    • Complies with the DisplayPort version 1.1 standard
    • Supports Dual-Link DVI resolutions up to 2560x1600
    • Supports Single-Link DVI resolutions up to 1920x1080
    • Supports up to 24-bit Deep Color (8-bits per channel)
    • Draws power from the Mini DisplayPort and USB connections
    • Supports up to 268.5 MHz bandwidth

    * Attention Mac Mini Customers using dual monitors only. There is an unresolved issue with using both the mini-DVI and mini display port outputs simultaneously. Specifically – when the mini-DVI cable is disconnected from the Mac mini, this causes the mini display port to not function  – often causing the display to show an “unsupported format” error. This appears to be an ongoing issue with multiple generations of Mac minis (models with mini-DVI and mini display port) and also appears to be happening with a variety of manufactures display adapters for macs, not just Monoprice adapters.

The solution – (Again, for dual monitoring Mac mini users only) Use the mini-DVI output for your main display, and the mini display port for the secondary display. That way - disconnecting the second display (mini display port) will not affect the output on the main display (mini-DVI). This will not be an issue if you are using two monitors - and are not disconnecting your mini-DVI adapter.

I initially went with the AMD certified active adapter, but kept getting an occasional DisplayLink Failure notice. The company says that their adapter isn't 120hz stable and suggested going back down to 60hz. This Monoprice adapter does 120hz with no link failures.

PROS: Works perfectly and gives 120hz option without DisplayLink Failure. Cables are long enough for any setup.

    CONS: None

    So so product
The product allowed me to connect a MacBook Pro with a mini displayport to my 30" monitor which required dual DVI. However, the results are far from satisfactory. When I was researching this adapter, I noticed that Apple's version of this product was pretty poorly rated, while the Monoprice one was rated much better. I opted to get this one and see that it does a very poor job. There are a lot of "shadows" around windows edges and more importantly there is flicker. Oddly enough the flicker is worse when the laptop is first turned on, but it does reduce after a while. I have no idea why this happens.

I hate to think what the Apple's product is like, given the poor quality of this unit. Maybe, I have a dud? I have not had a chance to call Monoprice's tech support.

PROS: Cheaper than the Apple product

CONS: Lots of flicker and shadows

For those of you wondering if this is an active mini DisplayPort adapter, it is! What a great deal at $30 less than anywhere else! I am using this to run 4 screens simultaneously (1 HDMI, 2 DVI, 1 mDP to DVI). This adapter allows you to expand your screen real estate using more than two legacy (non DP) connections.

PROS: Easty to set up and is an active mini DisplayPort adapter

    CONS: None

I've been using this adapter for a couple of weeks without problems so far, hooking up my Lenovo w540 laptop to my 30" monitor (through a KVM switch).

    Don't buy - low quality
Piece of junk. Really. When I first got it, I had to brace it a certain way so it would actually function (ie.. connections would work). Now, it doesn't work altogether. Asked monoprice for a refund and the tool wouldn't allow me.. probably because they know the lifetime of the product is only 5 months.

PROS: Works when all wire connections are actually soldered.

CONS: Only worked if I held the DisplayPort wire a certain way. Stopped working alltogether after 5 months.

    I'm very satisfied!
Works great with my 17'Macbook Pro (Dec, 2010) and My Dell 30 inch display(2007). I had too many issues with the Apple Adapter.

PROS: No issues what so ever.

    CONS: None

Plug and play. Works perfectly with my late 2008 Macbook Pro and an Apple 30" Cinema Display.

PROS: Better price than Apple's Mini DisplayPort /Thunderbolt to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.

    CONS: None
